Prospective of indigenous African wild food plants in alleviation of the severe iron deficiency anaemia in Sub‐Saharan Africa

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Iron deficiency anaemia remains a major public health challenge in Sub‐Saharan Africa, where population growth, displacement and limited resources heighten nutritional insecurity. We compiled a list of indigenous African underutilized wild food plants and examined their potential for addressing micronutrient deficiencies.

Impact of low-input meadows on arthropod diversity at habitat and landscape level [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
In Switzerland, in order to preserve and enhance arthopod diversity in grassland ecosystems (among others), farmers had to convert at least 7 % of their land to ecological compensation areas – ECA. Major ECA are low input grassland, traditional orchards,

Connecting tradition and technology: The digitization of the ethnobotanical collection at the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
The digitization of RBetno (JBRJ) represents a step forward for biodiversity conservation in Brazil. Aligned with the Kunming‐Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (Target 2, 2020–2030), this project documents the use of plants, including traditional knowledge and vernacular names, with a focus on the Atlantic Forest and Amazon.

Dietary energy levels affect productivity, meat quality, blood variables, energy efficiency and welfare indicators in broilers under welfare rearing conditions

open access: yesItalian Journal of Animal Science
Numerous studies have explored the welfare rearing conditions of broilers; however, studies on the level of metabolisable energy (ME) in feed, which is a key factor in broiler growth, are lacking.

Maximising Participation in the Australian National Lung Cancer Screening Program: A Discrete Choice Experiment of Eligible, High‐Risk Individuals

open access: yesRespirology, EarlyView.
A discrete choice experiment of lung cancer screening attributes. Study results demonstrate that lung cancer screening uptake could be significantly increased by offering program navigators and personalised invitations. The findings contribute significant insights to inform future improvements to the design and implementation of the Australian National

New Parameters for Seedling Vigor Developed via Phenomics

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2019
Early seedling establishment in rice (Oryza sativa L.), which is measured by primary/secondary tiller, shoot length, biomass, root-related traits, and leaf area index, is an important trait because it helps to compete for light, air, and water for better

Heating up parasitoid–host interactions: High temperature increased mortality of late‐instar braconid larvae and reduced ladybird recovery rate

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract With ongoing climate change, temperature‐dependent outcomes of host–parasitoid interactions can affect ecosystem functioning and key ecosystem services such as biological control. However, most studies addressing the impacts of temperature on host–parasitoid systems are

Contrasting light demands determine the coordination of plants' non‐structural carbohydrates and economic strategy over the range of solar spectral composition

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Non‐structural carbohydrates (NSC) are critical mediators of plant adaptation to fluctuating light environments. They are tightly coordinated with plant economic strategy, that is, leaf economics spectrum (LES) and root economics spectrum (RES).
