Generalized Additive Modeling of Ecological Data With mgcv: New Adequacy Assessment Tools

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
Anadromous Nunavik Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) during the upstream migration in the Aipparusik (Bérard) River in September 2017, Tasiujaq, Québec, Canada. Sampled female Arctic charr from this population and two other populations in Nunavik were jointly analyzed to estimate their length‐at‐maturity. This was achieved with the analysis of discrete

The international diffusion of RDA: a wide overview on the new guidelines

open access: yesJLIS.it, 2016
This issue of Jlis.it is focused on RDA, Resource Description and Access. In light of increasing international acceptance of this new cataloging content standard, the editors of Jlis.it wish to capture the background of how RDA came to be and the ...

Ecology and Diversity of Urban Drosophila Species Communities as Potential Indicators of Biodiversity Decline

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
We investigated urban Drosophila communities in Vienna using ~18,000 specimens collected with citizen scientists, identifying 13 species including two new records for Austria (D. mercatorum and D. virilis). Compared to surveys 30 years ago, species richness has declined by more than 50%, with formerly common species replaced by neobiotic taxa.

Synchronous and Asynchronous Variation of Taxonomic and Phylogenetic Diversity During the Succession of Pinus kesiya var. langbianensis Forest in Yunnan, China

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
Based on community data and the space‐for‐time‐substitution (SFTS) approach, this study shows that both taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity follow a cosine pattern during succession, with PD peaking earlier than TD. Community stability increases as niche differentiation strengthens, with competitive exclusion dominating early and late stages, and ...

Physiological and Epigenetic Responses of the Long‐Spined Sea Urchin Diadema antillarum Across a Spatiotemporal Gradient

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
Following catastrophic population declines in the 1980s and 2022, the keystone herbivore Diadema antillarum has become a focal species for Caribbean‐wide restoration initiatives. In the present work, we combined an 11‐month field survey across four reefs in the island of Culebra, Puerto Rico, with a reciprocal transplant experiment to evaluate ...

Genomic Evidence of Low Contemporary Effective Population Size and Southern Genetic Reservoirs in an Island Endemic Epiphytic Orchid of Taiwan

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
Genome‐wide data from ddRADseq revealed a latitudinal gradient in genetic diversity in a Taiwanese endemic orchid. This study shows that genomic data not only can help us understand the evolutionary origins of genetic diversity in a species but also uncover its genetic reservoir for future conservation planning.

Secondary Forest Conversion Into Betel Nut Plantations Reduces Soil Water Retention by Altering Soil Properties

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
Soil hydrological properties were significantly altered by the land‐use change. Topsoil water retention was reduced by the conversion of tropical forests into betel nut plantations. Stable soil infiltration rates were reduced by the conversion of tropical forests into betel nut plantations.

Vermicompost Alters Soil Microbial Communities and Decomposition but Increases Nitrate Leaching in Tropical Sugarcane

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
A six‐week field trial in Australian sugarcane soil used metabarcoding, trait‐based analysis and structural equation modelling to test how vermicompost affects soil biodiversity, decomposition and nitrate leaching under tropical conditions. Vermicompost shifted bacterial community composition and accelerated decomposition, yet increased nitrate ...

Determinants and Welfare Impacts of Combined Harvester Adoption in Wetland Areas of Bangladesh: The Role of Market Participation

open access: yesFood and Energy Security, Volume 15, Issue 1, January/February 2026.
Wetland areas in Bangladesh face annual crop losses due to flash floods and labor shortages. Combined harvester (CH) adoption remains limited due to high costs, lack of information, and inadequate support. Farm size, income, and land ownership significantly drive CH adoption.
