Multiplicity in reactive distillation of MTBE

Computers & Chemical Engineering, 1995
This paper presents an explanation of why methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) production by reactive distillation may yield multiple solutions. Widely different composition profiles and conversions may, as already reported by Krishna and others, result with identical column specifications, depending on the initial estimates provided and the VLE models being

Circumventing an Azeotrope in Reactive Distillation

Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, 2000
Using a McCabe−Thiele diagram, we explain nonintuitive behavior in a binary reactive distillation column where we react and separate two isomers displaying a maximum boiling azeotrope. Placing sufficient reaction on only two trays in the top section of the column, we shift the top operating line to lie below the 45° line. On lower nonreacting trays, we

Reactive Distillation Technology

2014
Reactive distillation (RD) processes integrate reaction and distillation, the reactants being converted with the simultaneous separation of the products. This chapter describes the use of reactive distillation technology to produce biodiesel by esterification of free fatty acids, or trans-esterification of various oils (triglycerides).

Reactive Distillation and Kinetic Azeotropy

Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, 1994
The general pattern of trajectories of equilibrium distillation with nonequilibrium reversible reaction in the liquid phase is discussed. In some cases there is a continuous line of singular points belonging to different ratios of the evaporation rate and the reaction rate. These points are the kinetic azeotropes.

Modeling of reactive distillation systems

Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, 1987

Enzymatic Reactive Absorption and Distillation

2018
In this work, innovative concepts for reactive separation processes, such as reactive absorption and distillation, that make use of bio-based catalysts, in specific enzymes, are discussed. Enzymatic Reactive Absorption (ERA) and Distillation (ERD) offer potential for energy and investment savings or improved selectivity by exploiting enzyme merits like

Process Intensification by Reactive Distillation

2016
Reactive distillation stands out as a successful example of a process intensification technology for enhanced chemical manufacture. After almost a century of development, it has achieved a high degree of maturity in terms of design capabilities, the availability of commercial suppliers of hardware and software, and a large variety of processes ...
