Lipopolysaccharide uptake is augmented in lipopolysaccharide‐tolerant mouse macrophage‐like cells via increased CD14 expression

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In normal (nontolerant) cells, CD14 is crucial for both LPS uptake and LPS signaling. In LPS‐tolerant cells, in which LPS‐induced TNF‐α and IFN‐β production is suppressed, there is a dramatic increase in surface CD14 expression. The overexpressed CD14 in LPS‐tolerant cells is responsible for the enhanced LPS uptake without inducing pro‐inflammatory ...

Ionizing Radiation Dose Differentially Affects the Host–Microbe Relationship over Time

open access: yesMicroorganisms
Microorganisms that colonize in or on a host play significant roles in regulating the host’s immunological fitness and bioenergy production, thus controlling the host’s stress responses. Radiation elicits a pro-inflammatory and bioenergy-expensive state,

Cyclic azapeptide CD36 ligand attenuates cardiac injury and reduces long‐chain fatty acid accumulation after myocardial ischemia–reperfusion in mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In a murine model of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (MI/R), the CD36 azapeptide ligand MPE‐298 reduces cardiac injury and transiently lowers left ventricular long‐chain fatty acids (LCFAs) accumulation 3 h after reperfusion, accompanied by a decrease of oxidative stress and inflammation‐associated genes' expression in the heart and adipose tissue.

Impact of dietary changes on retinal neuronal plasticity in rodent models of physical and psychological trauma

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics
IntroductionBlast injury has been implicated as the major cause of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and ocular system injury, in military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Soldiers exposed to traumatic stress also have undiagnosed, chronic vision problems.

Analysis of the effects of spaceflight and local administration of thrombopoietin to a femoral defect injury on distal skeletal sites

open access: yesnpj Microgravity, 2021
With increased human presence in space, bone loss and fractures will occur. Thrombopoietin (TPO) is a recently patented bone healing agent. Here, we investigated the systemic effects of TPO on mice subjected to spaceflight and sustaining a bone fracture.

Guiding AlphaFold to predict how Munc13‐1 opens Syntaxin‐1

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The syntaxin‐1 Habc‐domain (orange), linker (pink) and SNARE motif (yellow) form a closed conformation that binds to Munc18‐1 (violet) and is opened by the Munc13‐1 MUN domain (cyan) to form the SNARE complex that triggers neurotransmitter release.

Implementation of Poliovirus Containment in Poliovirus Designated Facilities—United States, 2017–2024

open access: yesPathogens
As the world approaches wild poliovirus eradication, effective containment measures are essential to minimize the risk of a facility-associated reintroduction into a polio-free community.

Pathways and pitfalls: a qualitative study of student experiences in biomedical science education

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Biomedical science students from underrepresented backgrounds face barriers including financial strain, disrupted laboratory access and cultural exclusion. Peer networks provide vital support when institutional systems are difficult to navigate. To create inclusive learning environments and achieve academic success, educators should blend active, hands‐

Mitochondrial genome of Bactrocera fruit flies (Tephritidae: Dacini): features, structure, and significance for diagnosis

open access: yesBMC Genomics
Background True fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) are among the most destructive pests of fruit and vegetables worldwide and are on the top of quarantine pest lists. To respond effectively to a fruit fly invasion, we need to identify the species rapidly
