The race for real-time Ethernet
Computing and Control Engineering, 2004Ethernet is starting to replace the industrial fieldbuses that were developed in the 1990s. Not only that it's going after the domain reserved for high-speed fibre optic buses like SERCOS. There are now three proposals for real time Ethernet. Two are from German companies, Siemens and Beckhoff, and the third is from B&R Automation, based near Salzburg.

Real Time Ethernet: Standardization and implementations
2010 IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics, 2010The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) failed to define one standard Real Time Ethernet (RTE) solution. The actual set of standards defines more than a dozen of technical different solutions. This paper tries to give an overview and indication of differences between these specifications.

Optimising non-real time frame handling in real time ethernet nodes
2015 IEEE World Conference on Factory Communication Systems (WFCS), 2015Modern Real Time Ethernet technologies rely on well-described hardware acceleration techniques to ensure that hard real-time deadlines are met. Real Time Ethernet is also often used in situations where appreciable non real-time bandwidth is used and where throughput is important.

Securing software-based hard real-time ethernet
2nd IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics, 2004. INDIN '04. 2004, 2005The integration of standard networked software in modern control systems raises flexibility and saves costs, but it also increases the need for thorough security measures. Securing time-critical communication interfaces is a central aspect. This paper introduces a real-time Ethernet stack and analyses its specific security risks, focusing on hostile ...

Real-Time Communication Method over Switched Ethernet
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2013This paper presents a method to support real-time data communication over switched Ethernet. The work without modifications in the Ethernet hardware and coexists with TCP/IP suites. Experiment results shows that compared with conventional real-time network protocol, the proposed work has better real-time performances and meets the requirements for ...

Simulation of Ethernet for real-time applications
IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology, 2003, 2004This article addresses the problem of data delivery probability estimation for RTPS (real-time publish-subscribe), built on the top of the UDP/IP protocol using Ethernet. Ethernet in general is not deterministic due to its media access control (CSMA/CD) and its behaviour under transient overload is not sufficient for any real-time application.

Making real-time Ethernet a reality
Computing and Control Engineering, 2004Current Ethernet standards promise transfer speeds of 100Megabits and more. This is significantly faster than established most of the field bus systems, and embedded network. Therefore Ethernet also seems to be a good choice for connecting industrial devices with real time requirements.

Deterministic real-time communication with switched Ethernet
4th IEEE International Workshop on Factory Communication Systems, 2002We show, under which conditions switched Ethernet can be called deterministic. The influence of the service strategies in switched Ethernet is investigated by simulation and compared with analytical bounds on the delays.

Ethernet-based real-time control data bus
IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science, 2002Wendelstein 7-X is designed as a steady-state experiment to demonstrate the fusion reactor relevance of the advanced stellarator concept. The experiment's control and data acquisition will be performed by a distributed system of computers and programmable logic controllers (PLCs).

Real-time synchronized vision sensors over Ethernet
29th Annual IEEE International Conference on Local Computer Networks, 2004A network of real-time vision sensors is described using 100baseT Ethernet. Each vision sensor comprises a camera connected to a dedicated computer to form a "vision node". Each vision node is capable of capturing and processing images and communicating the results over the network to a master computer in real-time.
