Phase Field Failure Modeling: Brittle‐Ductile Dual‐Phase Microstructures under Compressive Loading

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The approach by Amor and the approach by Miehe and Zhang for asymmetric damage behavior in the phase field method for fracture are compared regarding their fitness for microcrack‐based failure modeling. The comparison is performed for the case of a dual‐phase microstructure with a brittle and a ductile constituent.

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

Fostering Innovation: Streamlining Magnetocaloric Materials Research by Digitalization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Magnetocaloric cooling (MCE) is an environmentally friendly refrigeration method with great potential. Optimizing MCE materials involves the preparation and screening of large quantities of samples, which in turn generates a large amount of data. A digitalization approach is presented that uses ontologies, knowledge graphs, and digital workflows to ...

A closed-form analytical model for predicting 3D boundary layer displacement thickness for the validation of viscous flow solvers

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2018
A closed-form analytical model is developed for estimating the 3D boundary-layer-displacement thickness of an internal flow system at the Sanal flow choking condition for adiabatic flows obeying the physics of compressible viscous fluids.

Multimodal Data‐Driven Microstructure Characterization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A self‐consistent autonomous workflow for EBSP‐based microstructure segmentation by integrating PCA, GMM clustering, and cNMF with information‐theoretic parameter selection, requiring no user input. An optimal ROI size related to characteristic grain size is identified.

Studies in transonic flow

open access: yes, 1983
This thesis is divided into, two distinct parts. Part I describes the design and development of an intermittent cryogenic wind-tunnel, in which the cold conditions are generated by the expansion of high pressure gas.

On the Long-Time Behaviour of Compressible Fluid Flows Subjected to Highly Oscillating External Forces [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
summary:We show that the global-in-time solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations driven by highly oscillating external forces stabilize to globally defined (on the whole real line) solutions of the same system with the driving force given by

Microstructure‐Controlled Crack Propagation and Fracture Resistance in MoSiBTiC Alloy Revealed by Multiscale Extended Finite Element Method Modeling

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A two‐dimensional multiscale finite element analysis framework was established for the first‐generation MoSiBTiC alloy, and the mechanical and fracture‐related parameters of the constituent phases were calibrated through experiments and simulations. The framework provides a basis for analyzing crack propagation behavior in its complex microstructure ...

Advanced Analytical Modeling of Polytropic Gas Flow in Pipelines: Unifying Flow Regimes for Efficient Energy Transport

open access: yesTechnologies
In the present work, a new analytical model of polytropic flow in constant-diameter pipelines is developed to accurately describe the flow of compressible gases, including natural gas and hydrogen, explicitly accounting for heat exchange between the ...
