Alternative Structures for the Si(111) 7 × 7 Surface: Evidence for a Novel Class of Distorted Honeycomb Reconstructions

open access: yesphysica status solidi (b), Volume 263, Issue 11, November 2026.
It is believed that we understand and can calculate the properties of Si and its surfaces. Here our DFT calculations of a wide variety of alternative surface structures for the well studied and accepted DAS model reveal an alternative structure, ADH3, that better describes a wide range of experimental measurements.

Tailoring Model‐Based Systems Engineering for Sub‐100 g PlanarSats: A Power‐First View Stack

open access: yesSystems Engineering, Volume 29, Issue 6, Page 1152-1170, November 2026.
ABSTRACT This paper addresses how to apply model‐based systems engineering (MBSE) to ultrasmall planar satellites under severe power and resource constraints. PlanarSats are sub‐100‐gram spacecraft built as single printed‐circuit boards where the same surface must host both electronics and solar cells, so power generation, geometry, and component ...

Covalent Organic Frameworks in Smart Food Packaging: Advances, Challenges, and Future Prospects

open access: yesComprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety, Volume 25, Issue 6, November 2026.
ABSTRACT Food preservation challenges have positioned packaging as a rapidly evolving, innovation‐driven field, with smart packaging offering transformative solutions. Among advanced materials, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted growing attention due to their permanent porosity, structural tunability, high surface area, and chemical ...

Future of edge AI in biodiversity monitoring

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 17, Issue 11, Page 3050-3075, November 2026.
Abstract Many ecological decisions are slowed by the gap between collecting and analysing biodiversity information. Edge computing moves data processing closer to the sensor, with edge artificial intelligence (AI) using AI models for data processing and selective data transfer.

Sovereign Bonds and Market Discipline: Managing Accumulation and Uncertainty in Ecuador

open access: yesAntipode, Volume 58, Issue 6, November 2026.
ABSTRACT Over 50 years, sovereign debt in low‐ and middle‐income countries has become market‐based as financial firms displaced official lenders. Research explains how bond‐market discipline operates but leaves unanswered why sovereign bonds themselves require discipline to circulate as capital.
