Adiposity rebound and body mass index in Japanese patients with congenital hypothyroidism

open access: yesClinical Pediatric Endocrinology
The long-term prognosis of congenital hypothyroidism (CH) has become apparent since the introduction of newborn screening programs; however, the risk of obesity in patients with CH remains unclear. Early adiposity rebound (AR) is one of the predictors of obesity in adults.

The growth rebound effect: A theoretical–empirical investigation into the relation between rebound effects and economic growth

open access: yes, 2022
Rebound effects may challenge the concept that green growth can reconcile economic growth and reductions in energy consumption. This article investigates the interdependence between the rebound phenomenon and growth and introduces the ‘growth rebound ...

Potential selection effects when estimating associations between the infancy peak or adiposity rebound and later body mass index in children [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Obesity, 2016
This study aims to evaluate a potential selection effect caused by exclusion of children with non-identifiable infancy peak (IP) and adiposity rebound (AR) when estimating associations between age and body mass index (BMI) at IP and AR and later weight status. In 4744 children with at least 4 repeated measurements of height and weight in the age ...

Issues in Modelling Growth Data Within A Life Course Framework [PDF]

open access: yes
This thesis explores, develops and implements modelling strategies for studying relationships between childhood growth and later health, focusing primarily on the relationship between the development of body mass index (BMI) in childhood and later ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Energy Elasticities and the Rebound Effect: A Comprehensive Empirical Analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Exploiting Integrated Demand Response for Operating Reserve Provision Considering Rebound Effects

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2022
Electricity-driven thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs), e.g., air conditioners (ACs), have been widely utilized in demand response (DR) to provide operating reserve for power systems.
