Influence of Electrode Cooling on Recast Layers and Micro Crack in EDM of Titanium

Advanced Materials Research, 2011
Electrical discharge machining (EDM) process is a manufacturing method for shaping hard metals and formation of deep and complex shaped hole by spark erosion in electrical conductive materials such as metals, metallic alloys, ceramics etc. EDM process is achieved by a series of recurring electrical discharges between the electrode and workpiece in the ...

Dynamic change process of a recast layer in Nd:YAG millisecond laser trepan drilling

Journal of the Optical Society of America B, 2020
Laser drilling has extensive applications in modern industry. To improve the quality of microholes drilled by a high-power millisecond pulsed laser, the laser trepan drilling technique was studied in depth in this paper. Processing parameters, such as trepanning speed (TS) and rotation number (RN), were experimentally studied for their influence on a ...

Nanoscale carbide precipitation in the recast layer of a percussion laser-drilled superalloy

Scripta Materialia, 2009
The microstructure of the recast layer formed during percussion laser drilling of a powder-metallurgy Ni-based superalloy has been studied using electron microscopy in conjunction with focused ion beam serial section tomography. It is shown that the dendritic microsegregation of Ti in the supersaturated gamma recast grains reported previously is ...

Surface repairing and strengthening of TC4 ally with recast layer by ultrasonic shot peening

Materials Letters, 2020
Abstract In this paper, ultrasonic shot peening (USP) is used as a surface repairing and strengthening method for TC4 ally with recast layer produced by electrical discharge machining (EDM), and the influence of USP on the surface roughness, microstructure, and corrosion behavior of recast layer was studied.

Study on recast layer thickness and residual stress during WEDM of SMAs

Emerging Materials Research, 2017
Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are difficult to machine by thermoelectric processes due to the affinity of titanium (Ti) for oxygen, and the specific properties of SMAs have been taken into account for the design of SMA actuators. In this investigation, wire electro-discharge machining of a specific SMA is investigated with specific reference to the ...

Study on the variation of recast layer in laser trepan drilling by millisecond Nd:YAG laser

Ferroelectrics, 2020
Recast layer (RL) is a major defect in laser drilling of micro holes. In this study, some methods to reduce RL in micro-hole drilling were carried out by using a pulsed Nd:YAG laser (λ = 1.06 µm) o...

Fabrication of hole without recast layer on coated alloy by using laser and electrochemistry

Optik, 2019
Abstract Fabrication of hole by using laser and electrochemistry (FH-LE) is presented in this study. First, under electrolyte, a coating hole is milled by the photochemical effect of ultraviolet laser. Second, an alloy hole is machined by electrochemical machining (ECM) based on the coating hole.

Research on removal characteristics of recast layer of laser-electrolytic machining on small holes

The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2018
To address defects in the recast layer and microcracks in laser drilling, this study adopted laser-electrolytic composite machining technology to conduct a boring test on nickel-based superalloy In718 through flushing outside the ring electrode and hydrostatic machining.

Study of removing the recast layer by electrochemical dissolution with wire low feedrate in WEDM

The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2019
One characteristic of WEDM surface is that it is covered with numerous craters and re-solidified materials, forming the recast layer which deteriorates the surface quality and other properties such as fatigue strength. In this research, a method combining WEDM and electrochemical dissolution together in a simple process is proposed and studied.
