An exploratory study on the utilisation of resilience by middle adolescents in reconstituted families following divorce

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Education, 2013
Every year thousands of core families disintegrate through divorce, and in the ensuing restructuring of the family system the child has to cope with various development challenges, such as divided membership of two micro family systems and complexities ...

Mr BMT Achieves Systemic Macrophage Replacement With Preservation of Tissue Homeostasis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Microglia replacement by bone marrow transplantation (Mr BMT) enables systemic replacement of tissue‐resident macrophages. Despite persistent macrophage and tissue remodeling across multiple organs, core biological functions and innate immune responses remain preserved, supporting long‐term maintenance of organismal homeostasis and the therapeutic ...

Charting Endocrine Progenitors Across Species and Organs

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Endocrine progenitors give rise to the hormone‐producing cells of the pancreas and intestine. Using single‐cell multiomics and proteomics, this study compares these progenitors across species, systems, and organs, mapping the conserved and species‐specific gene regulatory networks that guide their formation.

Functional Properties of Human NMDA Receptors Associated with Epilepsy-Related Mutations of GluN2A Subunit

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, 2017
Genetic variants of the glutamate activated N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor (NMDAR) subunit GluN2A are associated with the hyperexcitable states manifested by epileptic seizures and interictal discharges in patients with disorders of the epilepsy ...

Disrupted TFEB/GDNF–cAMP/ATP Coupling Underlies Astrocytic Dysfunction and Depression in LRRK2 G2019S Parkinson's Mice

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The LRRK2 G2019S mutation, a Parkinson's disease–linked variant, has been associated with depression‐like phenotypes, but mechanisms remain unclear. We chart age‐dependent behavioral changes and astrocyte reactivity in G2019S mice and define a pathway connecting LRRK2 to TFEB/GDNF signaling, cellular energetics, and inflammation.

Real-time PCR expression profiling of genes encoding potential virulence factors in Candida albicans biofilms: identification of model-dependent and -independent gene expression

open access: yesBMC Microbiology, 2010
Background Candida albicans infections are often associated with biofilm formation. Previous work demonstrated that the expression of HWP1 (hyphal wall protein) and of genes belonging to the ALS (agglutinin-like sequence), SAP (secreted aspartyl protease)

Engineering Microbial Particles for Next‐Generation Biomedical Platforms

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Microbe‐derived particles (MDPs), which include extracellular vesicles, outer membrane vesicles, inclusion bodies, polysaccharide particles, and virus‐like particles, represent a rapidly expanding category of bioinspired nanomaterials. With their natural origin, intrinsic biocompatibility, and highly programmable functionality, MDPs serve as a ...
