The Watermelon Rectum

This is the first reported case of rectal vascular ectasia in association with gastric antral vascular ectasia (watermelon stomach). The patient, a 39-year-old woman with systemic sclerosis, reported chronic gastrointestinal blood loss and iron deficiency anemia.

Leiomyosarcoma of the Rectum

We have reported a case of leiomyosarcoma of the rectum. These tumors comprise 0.1% of all rectal tumors, with about 100 cases having been reported. Symptomatology is nonspecific; digital examination is the most effective method of detection. Local surgical excision is as effective as abdominoperineal resection.

A 46‐year‐old man with a suspected malignant submucosal tumor received a transabdominoperineal rectal amputation. The histologic diagnosis was xanthogranuloma. The differentiation of xanthogranuloma from malignant fibrous histiocytoma and other histiocytic tumors is difficult in the preoperative stage.

A case is reported which substantiates the findings of the Lahey Clinic with respect to the fact that a tumor may be contained wholly within the body of a polyp, and not invade its base. 3. The immediate removal of any and all rectal polyps appears clearly indicated as a therapeutic and or prophylactic measure.
