Bacteriologic Comparison of Tonsil Core in Recurrent Tonsillitis and Tonsillar Hypertrophy

The Laryngoscope, 2007
AbstractObjectives: Although many bacteriology studies on tonsillar diseases have been completed, all have been confined to children and were characterized by a paucity of cases. The purpose of this study was to analyze the underlying bacterial pathogens in tonsillar disease. Methods: A retrospective study was performed on 824 patients who underwent ...

Tonsillar Microbial Flora: Comparison of Recurrent Tonsillitis and Normal Tonsils

Acta Oto-Laryngologica, 1999
Tonsillar microbial flora was studied in cultures of tonsillar core specimens from 34 patients tonsillectomized due to recurrent group A streptococcal pharyngotonsillitis (n = 17) or sleep apnoea (n = 17). Patients in the sleep apnoea subgroup, who had no history of recurrent tonsillitis and manifested no tonsillar hypertrophy at ENT examination ...

Fine-Needle Aspiration in Recurrent Tonsillitis

Archives of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, 1991
The incidence of tonsillitis that is unresponsive to penicillin therapy is leading to concern. This phenomenon has been linked to a change in the core tonsil bacteria, in particular beta-lactamase production. To date, the only way to identify the presence of these resistant microbes is at tonsillectomy.

Recurrent throat infections (tonsillitis).

BMJ clinical evidence, 2007
Diagnosis of acute tonsillitis is clinical, and it can be difficult to distinguish viral from bacterial infections. Rapid antigen testing has a very low sensitivity in the diagnosis of bacterial tonsillitis, but more accurate tests take longer to deliver results. Bacteria are cultured from few people with tonsillitis.

Recurrent Tonsillitis: The Role of Chlamydia and Mycoplasma

Archives of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, 1992
The core tissue microflora of 40 patients who underwent tonsillectomies were examined with cultures, DNA probe tests, enzyme immunoassays, and direct immunofluorescence antibody tests for Chlamydia and Mycoplasma. We believe this is the largest and most accurate prospective study that has examined the role of Chlamydia and Mycoplasma in the core tonsil

Recurrent Tonsillitis: Histologic and Bacteriologic Evaluation

Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology, 1989
Histologic and bacteriologic evaluations of tonsils removed at surgery from ten patients with a diagnosis of recurrent tonsillitis were performed. The bacteriology was complex, with an average of 6.3 aerobic bacteria and 3.3 anaerobic bacteria isolated from each patient. Histologic sections revealed chronic cryptitis, with intact tonsillar architecture.

MBL expression in patients with recurrent tonsillitis

International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology, 2009
We evaluated mannose binding lectin (MBL) protein production and histological localization, MBL2 gene expression and genotypes distribution in patients characterized by recurrent tonsillitis, with the aim of verifying the innate immune response to the infection and inflammation occurring in the tonsils.MBL2 exon 1 and promoter polymorphims were ...

Quantitative Measurement of Beta Lactamase in Tonsils of Children with Recurrent Tonsillitis

Acta Oto-Laryngologica, 1984
Tonsils were obtained from 50 children suffering from recurrent tonsillitis. The tonsils' core material was cultured for aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. Beta lactamase production was assayed in all isolates and beta lactamase activity was measured in the contents of each tonsil.
