A fractal pattern of hierarchical genetic population structure in mixed stocks across fish segregated by dams revealed by genomic resources for curimba Prochilodus lineatus

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Genomic resources, new microsatellite markers and a novel observation of a fractal pattern in the genetic population structure are presented for curimba, Prochilodus lineatus, a freshwater migratory model species of South America. Our main goals were to investigate the presence of mixed fish stocks and the effects of damming‐induced ...

Occurrence of multiple congenital anomalies in Potamotrygon amandae (Elasmobranchii, Potamotrygoninae) embryos, including the first report of bicephaly

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Reports of teratogenic embryos in elasmobranchs have been documented in multiple species, with proposed aetiologies including environmental disturbances, genetic mutations, predation, exposure to endocrine‐disrupting compounds and maternal stress.

Alternated selection mechanisms maintain adaptive diversity in different demographic scenarios of a large carnivore

open access: yesBMC Evolutionary Biology, 2019
Background Different population trajectories are expected to impact the signature of neutral and adaptive processes at multiple levels, challenging the assessment of the relative roles of different microevolutionary forces.

Generation of Trichoderma harzianum with pyr4 auxotrophic marker by using the CRISPR/Cas9 system

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
Trichoderma harzianum is a filamentous fungus used as a biological control agent for agricultural pests. Genes of this microorganism have been studied, and their applications are patented for use in biofungicides and plant breeding strategies.

Evolutionary and environmental drivers of dry‐season deciduousness in a legume genus

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Leaf deciduousness is a key drought‐avoidance strategy in tropical flora, reducing water loss during seasonal dry periods. While winter‐deciduousness in temperate regions is well‐understood, the evolutionary and environmental drivers of dry‐season deciduousness remain poorly explored.

Ecological effects on female bill colour explain plastic sexual dichromatism in a mutually-ornamented bird

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
Sex differences in ornamentation are common and, in species with conventional sex roles, are generally thought of as stable, due to stronger sexual selection on males.

Horses on the Menu: Patterns and Drivers of Free‐Ranging Horse Consumption by Iberian Wolves

open access: yesMammal Review, Volume 56, Issue 2, June 2026.
Free‐ranging mountain ponies can comprise most of the Iberian wolf diet. Through a meta‐analysis of 137 studies, we show that horse consumption is shaped by prey availability, topography and human density, often surpassing wild and domestic ungulates and potentially serving as a buffer for livestock predation.
