[Translocation in red algae].

Leucine-(U)-C(14) applied to the midrib of a young phylloid of Delesseria sanguinea moves basipetally and acropetally and eventually appears in other phylloids of the same plant. The highest velocity of transport calculated was 63 cm/h. The pathway of movement seems to be the veins of the phylloids and the central core of the cauloid.

Sterols of some red algae

Abstract The sterol composition of 17 red algae has been determined. Only C-27 sterols have been found in substantial amounts; details of the structural elucidation of liagosterol (cholesta-5,23-diene-3β,25-diol) are given. The possible taxonomic significance of the sterol distribution is briefly discussed.

The phylum Rhodophyta is an enigmatic as semblage of organisms whose phylogenetic relationships with other eukaryotes are shrouded in uncertainty. The group was long held to be among the most primitive eukaryotes due to the lack of a centriole complex and the similarities between the red algal chloroplast and cyanobacteria (Garbary and Gabrielson 1990).
