JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1970
To the Editor.— It is difficult for me to lend allegiance to the conclusions presented by the AMA Committee on Transfusion and Transplantation in the editorial published inThe Journal( 212 :147, 1970). Specifically, transfusion of red blood cells (RBC) rather than whole blood would certainly provide additional safety in the case of a patient who has ...

Red blood cell deformability and protein adsorption on red blood cell surface
American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology, 1984Effects of protein and NaCl concentrations in plasma on red blood cell (RBC) deformability were studied using fresh human blood and a 5-microns Nuclepore filtration test. The protein and salt concentrations were varied by diluting the plasma with saline and adding crystalline NaCl to the fluids, respectively.

Cryopreserved red blood cells are superior to standard liquid red blood cells
Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, 2014Liquid preserved packed red blood cell (LPRBC) transfusions are used to treat anemia and increase end-organ perfusion. Throughout their storage duration, LPRBCs undergo biochemical and structural changes collectively known as the storage lesion. These changes adversely affect perfusion and oxygen off-loading.

Red Blood Cell Function and Blood Storage
Vox Sanguinis, 2000AbstractRed blood cells are ideal vehicles for delivering oxygen to tissues, but their functions deteriorate during liquid preservation. In this article, we review the role of red blood cells in oxygen delivery and methods to evaluate the effectiveness of red blood cell transfusion. Quantitative estimation of transfusion effects could avoid unnecessary

The life of the red blood cell
The Irish Journal of Medical Science, 1950It may well be that the main value of these studies will be to focus interest on the remarkable properties of the red cell and to stimulate yet more work on its ultramicroscopic structure and biochemical properties. As more immediate gains, they have given us improved methods of blood storage, better diagnosis of the haemolytic anaemias and more ...

Clinical psychophysiology requires competence in many therapeutic skills, including assessment of physical, mental, affective, and emotional states; biofeedback; and psychotherapy, which we may perform as strict behaviorists, cognitivists, or both. If we are physiologists, we tend to see the mind embedded in brain neurons; if mentalists, we believe a ...

Cryopreservation of Red Blood Cells
2014Cryopreservation of red blood cell concentrates (RBCs) is an important method for maintaining an inventory of rare RBC units and managing special transfusion circumstances. The permeating additive glycerol is used as a cryoprotectant to protect RBCs against freezing damage.
