Environmental and human factors shape the trophic ecology of a widespread marine predator

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 94, Issue 9, Page 1784-1799, September 2025.
Our study reveals how environmental factors and fishing pressure influence swordfish diet, highlighting trophic shifts under future climate scenarios. We provide a novel framework to strengthen our ability to plan for and manage the redistribution of species under global change ensuring that the energetic needs of predators are met.

PhyBaSE: A Bayesian structural equation model approach to causal inference in phylogenetic comparative analyses

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 6, Page 1136-1148, June 2025.
Abstract One of the main limitations of phylogenetic comparative analyses is that associations between traits can only be interpreted as correlations. Here, we present a novel Bayesian structural equation model (PhyBaSE) which allows us to disentangle direct from indirect relationships among variables to propose potential causal hypotheses while ...

Sequential testing of complementary hypotheses about population density

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 6, Page 1228-1238, June 2025.
Abstract Making inferences about population density is paramount in ecology and pest management for decision‐makers who often seek to determine how a population compares to a pre‐established static or dynamic threshold through sampling or monitoring. Sequential data analysis is appealing for monitoring and decision making as it is more cost‐efficient ...

Cognitive ecology of surprise in predator–prey interactions

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 3, Page 664-680, March 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract In this review, we relate theoretical work on the importance of surprise in cognition to empirical research relevant to surprise in predator–prey interactions. There have been multiple proposals as to how surprise should be defined and quantified in the context of ...

A spatially explicit assessment of factors shaping attitudes toward African elephant conservation

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 39, Issue 1, February 2025.
Abstract Conservation plans that explicitly account for the social landscape where people and wildlife co‐occur can yield more effective and equitable conservation practices and outcomes. Yet, social data remain underutilized, often because social data are treated as aspatial or are analyzed with approaches that do not quantify uncertainty or address ...

Redes bayesianas para predecir el estilo de aprendizaje de estudiantes en entornos virtuales

open access: yesAtoZ: Novas Práticas em Informação e Conhecimento, 2015
Introduction: It describes the use of Bayesian Networks to implement a model of uncertainty to predict the learning style of students through their interaction in a virtual learning environment based on the Felder-Silverman model.
