Space and resource use by American crow Corvus brachyrhynchos in an area endemic for chronic wasting disease

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
American crow Corvus brachyrhynchos is a common species throughout North America. Crows play a role in the ecology of multiple diseases and a single laboratory experiment has shown the potential for crows to pass infectious prions, such as those associated with chronic wasting disease (CWD), in their feces after being force‐fed with infected material ...

Study of the reduction rate anti-fixation phenomenon by combining precursor porosity and relative vacuum mechanisms

open access: yesAlexandria Engineering Journal
The high carbon emission (23 t CO2 / 1 t Mg) and high energy consumption (5tce / 1 t Mg) of raw magnesium smelting seriously limit the expansion of its output.

Large‐Scale Applications of Plasma Technologies: Progresses and Challenges

open access: yesHigh Voltage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Plasma technologies convert electrical power into energetic electrons, ions, reactive species, radiation and heat, thereby breaking through the bottleneck of purely thermal or chemical routes and bringing impressive changes to our world. This roadmap reviews the progress and challenges of plasma technologies from a large‐scale and application ...

Forces Behind South Australia's Unusual Structural Changes Since 1840

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The agricultural sector's share of GDP in growing economies typically declines but, for a century from the early 1850s, Australia's did not. That trend is most evident for the former colony and now State of South Australia (SA). Moreover, that share for SA has been almost flat since 1980 as well, along with the agricultural sector's share of ...

GOVERNING THE CLOUD: Infrastructural Statecraft and the Political Ecology of Digital Expansion in Oregon

open access: yesInternational Journal of Urban and Regional Research, EarlyView.
Abstract Oregon's wave of data center and semiconductor projects shows how cloud capitalism reorganizes resource systems and territorial governance. Examining Amazon, Google, and Intel, the article traces how fiscal incentives, utility programs, and land‐use instruments are recalibrated to secure hyperscale loads.

Osteological, Biological, and Genetic Consequences of Colonization of Fresh Waters by Marine Cottoid Fishes (Cottidae)

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Lacustrine forms of Triglopsis from North American and European lakes are at different stages of evolution, making them a suitable model for testing hypotheses about evolutionary patterns and rates. An integrative analysis of morphological, genetic, and biological adaptations occurring in lacustrine forms of the genus Triglopsis was carried out.

From Red Tape to Efficiency: The Influence of Professional Managers on Audit Report Lag in Chinese State‐owned Enterprises

open access: yesAbacus, EarlyView.
This study examines the impact of professional managers on audit report lag in Chinese state‐owned enterprises (SOEs). Using a novel, manually constructed dataset of A‐share listed SOEs from 2006 to 2020, we find that the presence of professional managers is associated with significantly shorter audit report lag.

Does conservation status predict research output?

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, EarlyView.
Abstract The Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973 uses the best available science to protect threatened and endangered species, but limited knowledge of listed species can undermine conservation success. This study examined whether ESA‐listed species receive more peer‐reviewed publications than ecologically similar non‐listed species.

Innovation and the great divergence

open access: yesThe Economic History Review, EarlyView.
Abstract Recent historical national accounting data show that the timing of the Great Divergence hinges on the different trends in north‐west Europe and the Yangzi Delta region of China. Although north‐west Europe only pulled ahead of the Yangzi Delta after 1700, both the positive trend of GDP per capita in north‐west Europe after 1700 and the negative

Modifications of the chemical composition and microstructure of flash smelting copper slags in the process of their reduction

open access: yesMetalurgija, 2015
Blister copper smelting in a flash smelting furnace results in generation of slag that contains high amounts of copper, iron and lead. Most commonly, this material is subjected to reduction with coke in an electrical furnace.
