The Effect of Blurred Perceptual Training on the Decision Making of Skilled Football Referees

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2018
When judging ambiguous foul situations in football (soccer), referees must attune to the kinematic characteristics inherent in genuine fouls to ensure that they can (i) recognize when a foul has taken place, and (ii) discriminate the presence of ...

Spot‐14 and its paralog Spot‐14R regulate expression of metabolic and thermogenic pathway genes in murine brown and beige adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Spot‐14 and Spot‐14R play distinct roles in regulating metabolism in brown and beige adipocytes. While both influence lipid and glucose pathways, Spot‐14 uniquely controls thermogenic gene expression. This dual regulation balances energy storage and heat production, highlighting potential therapeutic targets for obesity and metabolic disorders. Spot 14

Attitudes of referees in a multidisciplinary journal: An empirical analysis

open access: yesJ. Assoc. Inf. Sci. Technol., 2017
This paper looks at 10 years of reviews in a multidisciplinary journal, The Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation (JASSS), which is the flagship journal of social simulation. We measured referee behavior and referees' agreement.

A cellular system to study responses to a collision between the transcription complex and a protein‐bound nick in the DNA template

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present the cellular transcription‐coupled Flp‐nick system allowing the introduction of a Top1‐mimicking cleavage complex (Flpcc) at a Flp recognition target site within a controllable LacZ gene. LacZ transcription leads to the collision of RNA polymerase II (RNAPII) with Flpcc, and this causes RNAPII stalling, ubiquitination, and degradation.

Data science skills for referees: I Biological X-ray crystallography [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
Since there is now a growing wish by referees to judge the underpinning data for a submitted article it is timely to provide a summary of the data evaluation checks required to be done by a referee. As these checks will vary from field to field this article focuses on the needs of biological X-ray crystallography articles, which is the predominantly ...

Constructing a Test to Evaluate the Performance of Referees Using Modern Techniques with the 3D Feature in Wrestling Sport

open access: yesمجلة جامعة كويه للعلوم الانسانية والاجتماعية, 2019
Wrestling is characterized by a wide range of skills and basic kinetic skills and diverse defensive and offensive techniques. Thus, the referees should have a wide range of knowledge and vigilance, especially in formidable competitions.

Relationships between Sprint Ability and Endurance Capacity in Soccer Referees

open access: yesSports, 2018
The aim of this study was to analyze the association between sprint ability and endurance capacity in soccer referees. Twenty-three Spanish officials participated in this study. Each referee undertook, in this order, a 40 m linear straight sprinting test

Interaction vesicles as emerging mediators of host‐pathogen molecular crosstalk and their implications for infection dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Interaction extracellular vesicles (iEVs) are hybrid vesicles formed through host‐pathogen communication. They facilitate immune evasion, transfer pathogens' molecules, increase host cell uptake, and enhance virulence. This Perspective article illustrates the multifunctional roles of iEVs and highlights their emerging relevance in infection dynamics ...

STAT3 expression is reduced in cardiac pericytes in HFpEF and its loss reduces cellular adhesion and induces pericyte senescence

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) accounts for half of the heart failure cases. It is characterised by microvascular dysfunction, associated with reduced pericyte coverage and diminished STAT3 expression in pericytes. Loss of STAT3 impairs pericyte adhesion, promotes senescence, and activates a pro‐fibrotic gene program.

X-VARS: Introducing Explainability in Football Refereeing with Multi-Modal Large Language Model [PDF]

open access: yes
The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence has led to significant improvements in automated decision-making. However, the increased performance of models often comes at the cost of explainability and transparency of their decision-making processes. In this paper, we investigate the capabilities of large language models to explain decisions, using
