Reference dependence in iterative choices
Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, 2008Abstract Valuation of goods often proceeds from a series of hypothetical pairwise choices. We examine reference dependence on the outcome of such evaluations in a large-scale study in which respondents make a series of choices between areas that differ on cost of living and the quality of lakes and rivers.

Learning with misattribution of reference dependence
Journal of Economic Theory, 2022This paper discusses errors in learning that arise when an agent neglects how the sensation of elation or disappointment relative to expectations contributes to the overall utility, and wrongly attributes this component of the utility to the intrinsic value of an outcome.

Team Incentives and Reference-Dependent Preferences [PDF]
We investigate a multi‐agent moral‐hazard model where agents have expectation‐based reference‐dependent preferences à la Kőszegi and Rabin (2006, 2007). We show that even when each agent's probability of success in a project is independent, a principal may employ team incentives.

On Reference Dependent Shortlisting Behavior
The B.E. Journal of Theoretical Economics, 2017AbstractThis article studies and characterizes a family of reference-dependent choice procedures. The decision maker is assumed to compare alternatives with a reference alternative by a single criterion or multiple criteria. The choice set contains all alternatives passing the threshold (set by the reference alternative) in terms of all criteria ...

Reference Dependence in Behavioral Portfolio Selection
2022In this contribution, we address the issue of reference dependence within a behavioral portfolio model defined under Cumulative Prospect Theory. In such a framework, an investor selects the portfolio weights in order to maximize her prospect value, where portfolio returns are measured as deviations from a certain reference point.

Abstract Natural disasters and other traumatic events often draw a greater charitable response than do ongoing misfortunes, even those that may cause even more widespread misery, such as famine or malaria. Why is the response disproportionate to need?
