Reference Dependent Altruism [PDF]

open access: possible, 2014
In view of behavioral patterns left unorganized by current social preference theories, we propose a theory of reference dependent altruism (RDA). With RDA, one's degree of altruism increases at reference points. It induces equity and efficiency effects that are conditional on whether or not payoffs meet reference points.

Reference-Dependency of Happiness Ratings

Journal of Happiness Studies, 2014
A traditional happiness question does not provide a frame of reference as to how respondents should rate their current level of happiness. Respondents can consider different things when answering the question—for instance, how well their expectations are being met, how they are doing compared to the past or compared to their peers.

Reference Dependence and Politicians' Credibility [PDF]

open access: possible, 2014
We consider a model of electoral competition in which two politicians compete to get elected. Each politician is characterized by a valence, which is unobservable to voters and can take one of two values: high or low. The electorate prefers politicians with high valence, but random shocks may lead to the victory of low-valence ones.
