Reference Dependence in Intertemporal Preference
Management Science, 2023Dynamic structures in intertemporal choices offer multiple channels through which reference dependence can occur. We examine intertemporal reference dependence when using choice lists to elicit time preference over outcome sequences. Reference point effects can arise endogenously within an outcome sequence and exogenously from the experimental ...

Team Incentives and Reference-Dependent Preferences [PDF]
We investigate a multi‐agent moral‐hazard model where agents have expectation‐based reference‐dependent preferences à la Kőszegi and Rabin (2006, 2007). We show that even when each agent's probability of success in a project is independent, a principal may employ team incentives.

Meaningful Theorems: Nonparametric Analysis of Reference-dependent Preferences
Social Science Research Network, 2023We derive nonparametric sufficient and asymptotically necessary conditions for the existence of reference-dependent preferences, as in Kőszegi and Rabin’s (2006) structural implementation of Kahneman and Tversky’s (1979) prospect theory, that can ...

The Real Effects of Reference-dependent Preferences: Evidence from Mergers and Acquisitions
Social Science Research Network, 2023We investigate whether and how reference-dependent preferences affect acquisitions. We find that managers pursue risky and low-quality acquisitions when investors are in the loss domain.

A Reference-Dependent-Preferences-Based Model of Extended Warranty Purchase Decisions
Journal of Marketing Research, 2021Durable goods often come bundled with limited-time and sometimes generous factory/base warranties. Yet, for many durable goods, customers purchase extended warranties against which they rarely make claims.

Reference-dependent preferences and stock market participation
European Journal of Finance, 2022Prospect theory was proposed mainly to explain irrational investment behaviour. However, empirical evidence has come mostly from controlled experiments, and evidence from real data is rare.
