The reflective cracking phenomenon occurs when joints and cracks in a pavement that is generally made of concrete or cement-treated layers propagate up through the asphalt overlay and appear on the pavement surface. These cracks allow water to enter and cause the pavement deterioration process to accelerate, thereby increasing maintenance costs.

Ultrasonic reflection by a planar distribution of cracks
Journal of Nondestructive Evaluation, 1988Ultrasonic wave reflection and transmission by planar crack distributions is considered. General expressions for the reflection and transmission coefficients are derived for incident longitudinal and transverse time harmonic plane waves. For low frequencies, closed-form algebraic expressions are given in terms of the geometrical parameters, the ...

The changing face of professionalism: Reflections in a cracked mirror
Medical Teacher, 2015Variability is the law of life, and as no two faces are the same, so no two bodies are alike, and no two individuals react alike and behave alike under the abnormal conditions which we know as dise...

Cohesive Cracking Simulation of Asphalt Mixture with Reflective Crack through XFEM
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2012Firstly, the parameters of cohesive zone model in ABAQUS software are calibrated through the cohesive constitutive model determined by cohesive potential energy, which is provided by Oriz and Pandofi(1999). Then, the validity and liability are verified by the single element example which compares extended finite element simulation with experimental ...

Application of Pre-Cracking in Semi-Rigid Base to Mitigate Reflective Cracking
Advanced Materials Research, 2014Because of the high strength and sound stability, the cement stabilized base has been widely used in high grade pavement in China. But shrinkage cracking are easy to occur in the cement stabilized base. Under the repeating action of traffic loads and temperature loads, this kind of cracks are easy to propagate towards the asphalt surface, being called “

Reflection and Transmission of Elastic Waves by a Periodic Array of Cracks
Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1985The interaction of elastic waves with a planar array of periodically spaced cracks of equal length is investigated. For normal incidence, reflection and transmission of longitudinal and transverse wave has been considered. Application of finite Fourier transform techniques reduces the solution of the mixed-boundary value problem for a typical strip to ...

Failure of reflective metal coatings by cracking
Thin Solid Films, 1982Abstract The relationship between point defects and severe cracking of metal films is explored. Tests carried out on coatings of chromium, copper and nickel show that cracks radiate from pinholes in the metal film. This effect has been attributed to stress concentration in the neighborhood of the pinhole.
