Cohesive Cracking Simulation of Asphalt Mixture with Reflective Crack through XFEM

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2012
Firstly, the parameters of cohesive zone model in ABAQUS software are calibrated through the cohesive constitutive model determined by cohesive potential energy, which is provided by Oriz and Pandofi(1999). Then, the validity and liability are verified by the single element example which compares extended finite element simulation with experimental ...

Mechanistic-Empirical Approach for Modeling Reflection Cracking

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2000
Models developed to predict reflective cracking in flexible pavement overlays do not explicitly incorporate the combined effect of the cracked and uncracked areas in the original pavement. This affects the development of cracks in the overlay. Therefore, a model is needed that will incorporate this factor explicitly, making predicting of cracking in ...

Thermal reflective cracking of asphalt concrete overlays

International Journal of Pavement Engineering, 2010
Reflective cracking of asphalt concrete (AC) overlays is one of the most extensive pavement distress and damage mechanisms in composite pavement structures. Numerous studies have been performed to evaluate the reflective cracking potential of AC overlays under different loading scenarios. Most of these studies have focused on reflective cracking due to

Wisconsin Experiences with Reflective Crack Relief Projects

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2005
Many agencies place hot-mix asphalt overlays on deteriorating jointed or cracked portland cement concrete pavements to improve the ride, protect the pavement structure, and reduce noise. Reflection cracking of the joints and preexisting cracks through the overlay is a persistent problem.

Application of Pre-Cracking in Semi-Rigid Base to Mitigate Reflective Cracking

Advanced Materials Research, 2014
Because of the high strength and sound stability, the cement stabilized base has been widely used in high grade pavement in China. But shrinkage cracking are easy to occur in the cement stabilized base. Under the repeating action of traffic loads and temperature loads, this kind of cracks are easy to propagate towards the asphalt surface, being called “

Failure of reflective metal coatings by cracking

Thin Solid Films, 1982
Abstract The relationship between point defects and severe cracking of metal films is explored. Tests carried out on coatings of chromium, copper and nickel show that cracks radiate from pinholes in the metal film. This effect has been attributed to stress concentration in the neighborhood of the pinhole.

Solution for Distressed Pavements and Crack Reflection

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2003
It is commonly accepted that cracks in aged asphalt pavements will reflect through seal coat and overlay applications. Pavement fabric placed under asphalt concrete overlays will slow this crack reflection, but not stop it. Nineteen years of experience working with the same fabric under a double chip seal has shown that using a modified technique ...
