Periodic filaments in reflective broad area semiconductor optical amplifiers

Applied Physics Letters, 1992
Filaments with a regular spacing of the order of 25 μm are experimentally observed in double-pass broad area GaAlAs amplifiers for near normal injection angle. Their formation is attributed to nonlinear interaction between counterpropagating beams and Talbot self-imaging.

Modulation Characteristics of Reflective Quantum Dot Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers

Asia Communications and Photonics Conference, 2017
G-I relation linear range and modulation bandwidth of R-QDSOA are investigated. The results showed that R-QDSOA had higher G-I relation linear range and the modulation bandwidth easily reached above 17GHz, which could be further improved by optimizing parameters.

Cavity Ring-Down Characteristic Using Reflective Semiconductor Optical Amplifier

IEEJ Transactions on Sensors and Micromachines, 2010
An excellent cavity ring-down spectroanalyzer was realized using a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier. A negative feedback optical amplification effect of the amplifier recovers signal loss to a higher definition and provides an output signal whose baseline was reduced optically.

Simple model for optical pulse propagation in a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier

Numerical Simulation of Optoelectronic Devices, 2010
A simple time-domain model is presented that can predict optical pulse propagation in reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers (RSOAs). The RSOA saturation energy, effective lifetime and material gain coefficient parameters used in the model are determined using experimental measurements of the input and output pulse temporal profiles to the RSOA ...

A fiber-optical cable television system using a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier

Laser Physics, 2013
This investigation demonstrates a fiber-optical cable television system using a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) for uplink transmission. The downstream signal is cable television and the upstream signal is generated by remodulating the downstream signal via an RSOA with a radio-frequency signal.

120 Gb/s all-optical NAND logic gate using reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers

Journal of Modern Optics, 2020
In this paper, the unique features of the reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers (RSOAs) are exploited to numerically simulate the ultrafast performance of an all-optical NOT-AND (NAND) logic ...

Reflective semiconductor optical amplifier pattern effect compensation with birefringent fiber loop

Optical and Quantum Electronics, 2020
We experimentally explore and demonstrate the potential of a birefringent fiber loop (BFL) to compensate for the pattern effects (PE) induced in a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA), which is driven by optical data whose intensity, temporal and spectral characteristics heavily stress the RSOA.

Linearity enhancement of analog optical transmitter using gain saturated reflective semiconductor optical amplifier

Microwave and Optical Technology Letters, 2009
AbstractWe propose a new linearization scheme in optical external modulator employing high‐pass filter characteristic of a gain saturated reflective semiconductor optical amplifier for an analog optical transmission system. The proposed scheme is based on power level relation between fundamental signal and IMD3 signal when a radio‐frequency tone is ...

Bistabilities of Birefringent Vertical-Cavity Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers With Antiresonant Reflecting Optical Waveguide

IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, 2010
Bistable characteristics of birefringent antiresonant reflecting-optical-waveguide (ARROW) vertical-cavity semiconductor optical amplifiers (VCSOA) under external optical injection with multi-mode profile and arbitrary polarization orientation are investigated theoretically. It is found that the presence of ARROW can realize stable single-mode bistable

Power penalty due to optical back reflection in semiconductor optical amplifier repeater systems

IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 1990
The effect of optical back-reflection on the bit-error-rate performance of a semiconductor laser amplifier repeater system is evaluated at 565 Mb/s. It is found that the degradation of the back-reflection is mainly caused by multiple reflection in the amplifier and depends on the internal gain of the optical amplifier and the reflectivity of the ...
