Abstract Sympathetic nervous system activation is a hallmark of high‐altitude hypoxia, yet the afferent mechanisms remain incompletely defined. We examined the relative contributions of pulmonary arterial mechanoreceptors and carotid chemoreceptors – two excitatory pathways co‐activated by hypoxia – to sustained sympathoexcitation at altitude.

Acute intermittent hypercapnic hypoxia augments left ventricular contractility
Abstract figure legend Twenty‐four healthy adults were studied to determine the effects of an acute session of 40 min of intermittent hypercapnic hypoxia on cardiac performance. Cardiac function was assessed via echocardiography at rest and during graded stages of lower‐body negative pressure before and after the intervention to quantify load ...

Abstract figure legend This randomized cross‐over trial (N = 12) addressed the hypothesis that selective reduction of pulmonary arterial pressure (i.e. manipulation of pulmonary arterial mechanoreceptor activation) during hypoxic exercise would reduce sympathetic outflow (muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA)) in healthy humans.

ABSTRACT Issue Addressed Tobacco smoking disproportionately affects people experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage. Improving access to effective smoking cessation programmes and medications is crucial to reducing this gap. Here, we report on a programme trialling the provision of free nicotine replacement therapy to priority populations through ...

ABSTRACT As breath‐hold divers, marine mammals must coordinate their use of both aerobic and anaerobic metabolism to maximize their time at depth. One indication of the relative reliance between these two energy‐producing systems is the aerobic dive limit (ADL), defined as the dive duration where post‐dive blood lactate concentrations surpass resting ...
