IMAGING IN REFLEX SYMPATHETIC DYSTROPHY

The diagnosis of reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) relies on clinical evaluation, scintigraphy or MR imaging, and routine radiographs. Because RSD has variable manifestations with a strong psychogenic overlap, it is desirable to have a noninvasive test to determine the presence of RSD to allow for appropriate treatment.

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy in a child

We describe a 9 1/2 year old girl who suffered from severe recurrent pain and functional limitation in her right leg with hyperesthesia, hyperalgesia, color change and edema as the presenting symptoms, during the previous two months. All laboratory tests were found to be normal and diagnosis of reflex sympathetic dystrophy was made.

The case of a patient with an uncommon, poorly understood, sharply marginated geometric zone of erythema is reported. Pseudo-Kaposi's sarcoma developed in the same patient in the foot affected by reflex sympathetic dystrophy, an association not previously reported.
