Can Western water law become more 'relational'? A survey of comparative laws affecting water across Australasia and the Americas. [PDF]

open access: yesJ R Soc N Z, 2023
ABSTRACT There is increasing support, in international legal theory and advocacy, for water governance approaches that go beyond the technocratic, and recognise the reciprocal relatedness of water peoples and water places. Such an approach may seem logical within certain Indigenous law and belief systems, but can Western legal frameworks become more ...

Canalized to heat, plastic to cold: adaptive coordination of leaf and seed strategies in populations spanning an elevational gradient. [PDF]

open access: yesNew Phytol
Summary In tropical mountains, surviving temperature extremes demands finely tuned strategies. We investigated how populations of the bromeliad Pitcairnia flammea across a 2200 m elevational gradient balance genetic canalization and plasticity, and whether thermal strategies are coordinated between seeds and leaves.

Effects of floral resources on honey bee populations in Mexico: Using dietary metabarcoding to examine landscape quality in agroecosystems. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
This study investigates how landscape diversity and climatic factors affect the populations and nutritional health of honey bee colonies in Mexico. It was found that greater landscape diversity correlates with higher pollen diversity, while areas with more agriculture and urbanization show lower bee densities.

The acoustic structure of spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi) calls is related both to caller goal and arousal

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Primatology, Volume 85, Issue 8, August 2023., 2023
Acoustic structure and the discriminability of 382 spider monkey calls produced by 27 individuals across six different caller goal and arousal contexts. Abstract Analyzing the factors related to the acoustic structure of primate calls is fundamental to identifying the potential information these signals convey, and therefore, their potential function ...

Alfalfa genomic selection for different stress‐prone growing regions

open access: yesThe Plant Genome, Volume 15, Issue 4, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) selection for stress‐prone regions has high priority for sustainable crop–livestock systems. This study assessed the genomic selection (GS) ability to predict alfalfa breeding values for drought‐prone agricultural sites of Algeria, Morocco, and Argentina; managed‐stress (MS) environments of Italy featuring moderate

The role of agroforestry in restoring Brazil's Atlantic Forest: Opportunities and challenges for smallholder farmers

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 4, Issue 2, Page 462-480, April 2022., 2022
Abstract Restoring the degraded Atlantic Forest is one of the biggest conservation challenges in Brazil. In a biome with high human presence, understanding the potential for restoration approaches, such as agroforestry, to provide benefits to smallholder farmers and biodiversity is essential in developing equitable restoration strategies.

Large‐Scale Assessment of Soil Physical Quality of Rural Settlements in the Southeast of Goiás, Brazil

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Soil Science, Volume 2022, Issue 1, 2022., 2022
Land use and soil physical quality are related. In this work, the S index was used to evaluate the physical quality of the soils of three rural settlement units located in the Brazilian Cerrado, with areas ranging from 700 to more than 4000 hectares, based on a novel method. To map the S index, a set of pedotransfer functions for water retention curves
