Optimisation of distributed feedback laser biosensors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
A new integrated optical sensor chip is proposed, based on a modified distributed- feedback (DFB) semiconductor laser. The semiconductor layers of different refractive indices that comprise a laser form the basis of a waveguide sensor, where changes in ...

Photonic Crystal Fiber Modal Interferometer for Refractive Index Sensing

open access: yesCommunications, 2013
We present a modification of core-cladding intermodal interferometer for refractive index sensing. Its structure consists of double cladding photonic crystal fiber (PCF) as a sensing element.

Fiber Optic-Based Refractive Index Sensing at INESC Porto [PDF]

open access: yesSensors, 2012
A review of refractive index measurement based on different types of optical fiber sensor configurations and techniques is presented. It addresses the main developments in the area, with particular focus on results obtained at INESC Porto, Portugal. The optical fiber sensing structures studied include those based on Bragg and long period gratings, on ...

Lessons Learned: Quality Analysis of Optical Coherence Tomography in Neuromyelitis Optica

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Optical coherence tomography (OCT)‐derived retina measurements are markers for neuroaxonal visual pathway status. High‐quality OCT scans are essential for reliable measurements, but their acquisition is particularly challenging in eyes with severe visual impairment, as often observed in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders ...

Research on D-Shape Open-Loop PCF Temperature Refractive Index Sensor Based on SPR Effect

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2022
PCF (Photonic crystal fiber) temperature refractive index sensor based on SPR effect with the new double membrane open-loop structure is proposed. The inner surface of such PCF’s open-loop structure is plated with a layer of 70 nm gold film, and a

A Q‐Learning Algorithm to Solve the Two‐Player Zero‐Sum Game Problem for Nonlinear Systems

open access: yesInternational Journal of Adaptive Control and Signal Processing, Volume 39, Issue 3, Page 566-581, March 2025.
A Q‐learning algorithm to solve the two‐player zero‐sum game problem for nonlinear systems. ABSTRACT This paper deals with the two‐player zero‐sum game problem, which is a bounded L2$$ {L}_2 $$‐gain robust control problem. Finding an analytical solution to the complex Hamilton‐Jacobi‐Issacs (HJI) equation is a challenging task.

Quantum dot-embedded microspheres for remote refractive index sensing [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Physics Letters, 2008
We present a refractometric sensor based on quantum dot-embedded polystyrene microspheres. Optical resonances within a microsphere, known as whispering-gallery modes (WGMs), produce narrow spectral peaks. For sensing applications, spectral shifts of these peaks are sensitive to changes in the local refractive index.
