Treatment of refractory bipolar depression

Current Psychiatry Reports, 2007
Methods: This multicenter study used a randomized but open-label design. Study drugs (tranylcypromine, 20–100 mg/d, or lamotrigine, 25–400 mg/d) were added to ongoing therapy with a mood stabilizer (lithium, valproate, or carbamazepine at therapeutic levels). The trial’s first stage lasted 10 weeks.

Adjunctive yohimbine for treatment in refractory depression

Biological Psychiatry, 1993
Most antidepressant drugs, as well as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), exert clinical efficacy over a time period corresponding to the drug's effect of decreasing the density of postsynaptic beta-adrenergic receptors in the brain (Sulser 1984). This finding has led to the hypothesis that "down-regulation" of postsynaptic beta receptors may be one of ...

Treatment-Refractory Depression

2004
Despite the availability of many newer antidepressant medications, a significant percentage of patients are partial responders or have treatment-resistant depression (TRD). In such cases, there are very few data to indicate what step (combination, augmentation, or switching) should be taken next.

Bupropion/Nortriptyline Combination for Refractory Depression

Annals of Clinical Psychiatry, 1994
Many patients fail to respond to one or more trials with a single antidepressant. In such cases polypharmacy is often necessary and beneficial, although there may be an increased risk of complications. Four case reports are presented of patients with refractory depression treated successfully with the combination of the tricyclic antidepressant ...

This group typifies treatment-refractory depression (TRD), defined as a failure to demonstrate an "adequate" response to an "adequate" treatment trial (i.e., sufficient intensity of ...

Efficacy of fluvoxamine in treatment-refractory depression

Journal of Affective Disorders, 1988
The efficacy of the potent and selective unicyclic serotonin reuptake inhibitor, fluvoxamine, was evaluated in 38 consecutively admitted depressed patients judged refractory to standard antidepressants using operationalized criteria. Twenty-eight patients completed a single-blind protocol involving greater than or equal to 2 weeks of placebo and 4-6 ...
