The evidence base for ranger patrol effectiveness in conservation and how to improve it
ABSTRACT Ranger patrols are a cornerstone of wildlife protection efforts around the world and occur across all ecological governance systems. Evidence that patrols reduce threats to wildlife and enable their recovery has not been systematically examined previously.

Abstract Background Sheep wool may reduce drought stress in grasslands when used as a soil amendment. Two experiments were conducted to explore if: (i) water absorbed by wool would be biologically ‘active’ and therefore available to plants, using a novel method of measuring water activity (a w); and, (ii) adding wool to compost would delay water stress

Noninvasive Speech Restoration After Total Laryngectomy Using Surface Electromyography: Pilot Study
We present a pilot study demonstrating that noninvasive surface electromyography (sEMG) can restore intelligible speech in a patient after total laryngectomy by decoding silently articulated muscle activity into synthesized speech, with the option to recreate the patient's own pre‐surgical voice using a small amount of archived audio.

ABSTRACT This study examines Wari obsidian production in a cache of 39 bifaces found at the Late Moche site of San José de Moro (Jequetepeque Valley, North Coast of Peru, 700–850 ad). Portable X‐ray fluorescence, geometric morphometric, and technological analyses were used to investigate raw material provenance and bifacial production.

A framework for maximizing the benefit from retaining regrowth on private land
Abstract Conservation interventions often have lower‐than‐desired positive impacts, as revealed by retrospective counterfactual‐based evaluations. To address this, a prospective counterfactual‐based approach can be used to estimate potential benefits and design conservation interventions to maximize outcomes. We developed a framework for estimating the

ABSTRACT Background Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a chronic and life‐limiting hemoglobin and systemic vascular disease. While over 1000 people have undergone hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) over the last 40 years, long‐term disease‐specific and health‐related quality of life data are lacking.

ABSTRACT Aim Hypoxic preconditioning of cells holds promise for regenerative therapies, yet identifying effective and safe methods for clinical application remains challenging. We aimed to determine optimal hypoxia‐mimetic small molecules (SMs) that stabilize hypoxia‐inducible factor‐1α (HIF‐1α) and their dosages for hypoxic preconditioning in stem ...

Summary diagram of the utilization of additional carbohydrates fixed under elevated CO2 belowground in natural low‐phosphorus (P) (a) and P‐fertilized (b) conditions. Soil respiration consists of heterotrophic respiration from microbial activity in bulk soil, autotrophic respiration from fine‐root activity and rhizomicrobial respiration driven by ...
