Register windows vs. register allocation
ACM SIGPLAN Notices, 1988A large register set can be exploited by keeping variables and constants in registers instead of in memory. Hardware register windows and compile-time or link-time global register allocation are ways to do this. A measure of the effectiveness of any of these register management schemes is how thoroughly they remove loads and stores.

Virtual Registers: Reducing Register Pressure Without Enlarging the Register File
2007This paper proposes a novel scheme to mitigate the register pressure for statically scheduled high-performance embedded processors without physically enlarging the register file. Our scheme exploits the fact that a large fraction of variables are short-lived, which do not need to be written to or read from real registers.

Shift Registers and Counter Registers
1982It is convenient to have registers which have a built-in capability of performing operations on the bit patterns stored in them. Such operations include shifting and counting. In SDC, the ACC will be a shift register so that the SHR instruction of table 1.4 can be executed.
