Composite Materials Reinforcement of Existing Masonry Walls

Historically, masonry buildings have been designed with little or no regard for the effects of seismic loads. Recent earthquakes in California, Japan, and other parts of the world have demonstrated that these older masonry structures are extremely susceptible to the lateral forces imposed during such an event.

A shake table investigation was carried out on a full-scale U-shaped masonry assemblage to study the effectiveness of Steel Reinforced Grout (SRG) for the improvement of the out-of-plane seismic capacity of masonry walls. Strengthening masonry infill walls with reinforced plaster

One technique for strengthening masonry infill walls against seismic lateral forces permitted by the Turkish Seismic Code is to add a plaster layer with mesh reinforcement to one face of the wall. The study described in this paper was performed to test and analyse the effectiveness of this technique for lateral loads.
