An acute bout of cycling does not induce compensatory responses in pre-menopausal women not using hormonal contraceptives [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
There is a clear need to improve understanding of the effects of physical activity and exercise on appetite control. Therefore, the acute and short-term effects (three days) of a single bout of cycling on energy intake and energy expenditure were ...

The relationship between depression and relative fat mass (RFM): A population-based study

open access: yesJournal of Affective Disorders
Relative fat mass (RFM) is a novel indicator for measuring body fat. The relationship between RFM and depression was explored using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 2005 to 2018.A general statistical description of the population included in the study was performed, and logistic analyses were used to explore the ...

Bimetallic Nanoparticles as Cocatalysts for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Recent developments have introduced bimetallic nanoparticles as effective cocatalysts for photocatalytic systems. This review explores the rapidly expanding research on bimetallic cocatalysts for photocatalytic production of hydrogen, emphasizing the creation of carrier‐selective contacts, localized surface plasmon resonance effects, methodologies for ...

Laser‐Induced Graphene from Waste Almond Shells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Almond shells, an abundant agricultural by‐product, are repurposed to create a fully bioderived almond shell/chitosan composite (ASC) degradable in soil. ASC is converted into laser‐induced graphene (LIG) by laser scribing and proposed as a substrate for transient electronics.

The contributions of hepatic de novo lipogenesis to the difference in body fat mass of genetically lean and fat duck breeds

open access: yesJournal of Applied Animal Research, 2018
The underlying reasons for genetic differences in body fat mass remain unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the contributions of hepatic de novo lipogenesis (DNL) to the genetic differences in fat mass in ducks.

Advanced Flame Retardant Strategies and Fire Performance Assessment for Safer Photovoltaics in Buildings: A Two‐Part Review

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The integration of photovoltaic (PV) systems into building structures introduces distinct fire risks with critical implications for occupant safety. This review examines the key fire hazards associated with PV implementation and explores mitigation strategies, including flame‐retardant additives.

Body composition data from the rat subjects of Cosmos 1129 experiment K-316 [PDF]

open access: yes
The effects of 18.5 days of weightlessness on the body composition of young, growing, male laboratory rats were examined. Three groups of 5 rats each were examined. It is indicated that exposure of young, growing, male rats to 18.5 days of weightlessness

Tailoring the Properties of Functional Materials With N‐Oxides

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The properties of materials bearing N‐oxide groups are often dominated by the polar N+─O− bond. It provides hydrophilicity, selective ion‐binding, electric conductivity, or antifouling properties. Many of the underlying mechanisms have only recently been discovered, and the interest in N‐oxide materials is rapidly growing.

Relative sarcopenia and mortality and the modifying effects of chronic kidney disease and adiposity

open access: yesJournal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, 2019
Background Conventional definitions of sarcopenia based on lean mass may fail to capture low lean mass relative to higher fat mass, that is, relative sarcopenia.

A Smart Bio‐Battery Facilitates Diabetic Bone Defect Repair Via Inducing Macrophage Reprogramming and Synergistically Modulating Bone Remodeling Coupling

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This research presents a novel implantable bio‐battery, GF‐OsG, tailored for diabetic bone repair. GF‐OsG generates microcurrents in high‐glucose conditions to enhance vascularization, shift macrophages to the M2 phenotype, and regulate immune responses.
