Ranking the benefits of biodiversity: an exploration of relative values

Journal of Environmental Management, 2002
Public concern about the alarmingly high rate of biodiversity loss has not been matched by public willingness to bear boundless costs to stem the tide of extinction. Because resources for conservation are limited, setting conservation priorities to use those resources effectively is crucial.

On relative ranks of full transformation semigroups

Communications in Algebra, 1998
For a semigroup S and a set the relative rank of S modulo A is the minimal cardinality of a setB such that generates S. We show that the relative rank of an infinite full transformation semigroup modulo the symmetric group, and also modulo the set of all idempotent mappings, is equal to 2. We also characterise all pairs of mappings which, together with

Relative deprivation in rank-order tournaments

Labour Economics, 2000

Rank Dependent Relative Mobility Measures [PDF]

open access: possible, 2010
We develop a directional measure of income mobility. This measure can be expresssed as a rank dependent mean of the individual mobilities in society and allows to give more weight to lower individual mobilities. The class includes the measures of directional mobility encountered in the literature. We apply our measure to compare income mobility between
