Biophysical processes of morphogenesis in lizard lungs

open access: yesDevelopmental Dynamics, Volume 255, Issue 9, Page 867-880, September 2026.
Abstract Background The lungs of squamate reptiles (lizards and snakes) are highly diverse, exhibiting single chambers, multiple chambers, transitional forms with two to three chambers, along with a suite of other anatomical features, including finger‐like epithelial projections into the body cavity known as diverticulae.

Sydney Phylogenetics Workshop: Lessons From the Past 15 Years

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
Phylogenetic analysis forms an important component of research in the life sciences. The Sydney Phylogenetics Workshop has offered an annual training opportunity suitable for early career researchers. In this article, we provide an outline of the content and format of the workshop, the challenges associated with running such an event on a minimal ...

Toward Repurposing Global Passive Air Sampling Networks for Insect Monitoring: Promises and Pitfalls of Airborne eDNA

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 5, September‐October 2026.
Our key findings show that polyurethane passive air samplers can sample insects, although highly abundant insects tend to be overrepresented. Our results also suggest that airborne eDNA might give us a broad temporal image of the insect communities over several weeks, rather than a snapshot of when samples are collected.

Short‐Term Effect of Negative Verbal Language Versus Positive Verbal Language on Physical and Functional Capacity and Pain in People With Chronic Primary Low Back Pain

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Pain, Volume 30, Issue 8, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Low back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of years lived with disability. While education is recommended by most guidelines, the type of language used can lead to a placebo or nocebo effect. This study aims to compare the short‐term effect of negative language versus positive language on physical and functional capacity in ...

Mathematical Modeling of Pulse‐Seeded Metapopulation Dynamics for Andes Hantavirus Border Dispersal

open access: yesEngineering Reports, Volume 8, Issue 9, September 2026.
A pulse‐seeded metapopulation SEIR model for Andes hantavirus maritime dispersal shows that heterogeneous quarantine compliance determines secondary outbreak risk. The weakest‐compliance country governs global containment, while uniform compliance above ∼65%$$ \sim 65\% $$ reduces the global reproduction number below unity.

Models for Temporal Clustering of Extreme Events With Applications to Mid‐Latitude Winter Cyclones

open access: yesEnvironmetrics, Volume 37, Issue 6, September 2026.
ABSTRACT The occurrence of extreme events like heavy precipitation or storms at a certain location often shows a clustering behavior and is thus not described well by a Poisson process. We construct a general model for the inter‐exceedance times (IETs) in between extreme events which combines different candidate models for such behavior. One of them is
