A new possibilistic reliability index definition

open access: yes, 2010
In this work, a new and efficient definition for a reliability index is explored for real structural engineering problems. The main innovative aspect is that it is based on a possibilistic criteria instead of a probabilistic one.

A Calculation Method for Reliability Index of a Deep–Bedded Karst Tunnel Construction with Cavity Located Ahead of Tunnel Working Face

open access: yesBuildings
For the purpose of reliability quantitative assessment of the surrounding rock of the deeply embedded karst tunnel and the geological body around the cavern in the case of the cavern in the forepart of the tunnel face, on the basis of the upper bound ...

Iron homeostasis disruption and lipid peroxidation in skeletal muscle during short‐term immobilization

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
14‐day casting‐induced immobilization reduced gastrocnemius muscle mass and increased non‐heme iron and ferritin heavy chain levels. Despite iron accumulation, transferrin receptor 1 and iron regulatory protein 2 were paradoxically upregulated. Lipid peroxidation was elevated without compensatory antioxidant responses.

The Development and Clinical Testing of a Movement Quality Outcome Measure for Patients with Neurological Conditions: The Leeds Movement Performance Index

open access: yes
Background In modern neurological physiotherapy practice, a patient’s neuroplasticity is harnessed, teaching them to develop motor control at ‘impairment’ level.

The test-retest reliability of centre of pressure measures in bipedal static task conditions - A systematic review of the literature

open access: yes, 2009
Summary of background data: The analysis of centre of pressure (COP) excursions is used as an index of postural stability in standing. Conflicting data have been reported over the past 20 years regarding the reliability of COP measures and no standard ...

Rapid screening of staphylokinase protein variants using an unpurified cell‐free expression system

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
An unpurified cell‐free protein synthesis (CFPS) platform enables rapid functional screening of staphylokinase variants. Direct plasminogen‐activation assays performed in microplate format provide real‐time activity readouts, allowing rapid identification and ranking of variants with improved or reduced fibrinolytic activity without protein ...

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...
