They are perceived as ‘(perceptual) reliefs’, that are surfaces in 2 + 1D perceptual space, that is the product space of the 2D visual field and the 1D ‘depth dimension’. It is in many respects irrelevant whether the observer views a true 3D scene or a flat (2D) picture of a scene.

Molecular Oncology, EarlyView.This study identifies somatostatin receptor 4 (Sstr4) as a critical tumor suppressor against skin and head/neck cancers (HNSCC, cSCC, and BCC). The loss of Sstr4 removes a check on cell growth, causing hyperactivation of the MAPK‐ERK signaling pathway (↑).

Reconstructing relief surfaces [PDF]
Image and Vision Computing, 2004 This paper generalizes Markov Random Field (MRF) stereo methods to the generation of surface relief (height) fields rather than disparity or depth maps. This generalization enables the reconstruction of complete object models using the same algorithms that have been previously used to compute depth maps in binocular stereo.
