Abstract This chapter discusses the function of Article 4 of the 1951 Convention to grant refugees in the host country freedom of religion. Since the issue was mentioned expressly, freedom of religion receives a prominent place compared to other fundamental freedoms which refugees may rely on in the host country.

This chapter troubles these claims through a reading of Barth’s discussion of religion in the second edition of his commentary on Romans and his critique of religion in §17 of Church Dogmatics.

The point of departure for my study is a disagreement with the views of Walter Lowrie, one of the most prolific translators of SK into English and the author of the extensive and competent biography, Kierkegaard (Princeton, 1938).
