A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

Renal Mitochondrial Cytopathies
Renal diseases in mitochondrial cytopathies are a group of rare diseases that are characterized by frequent multisystemic involvement and extreme variability of phenotype. Most frequently patients present a tubular defect that is consistent with complete

A Case of Spontaneous Renal Haemorrhage (Wunderlich Syndrome) in an Anticoagulated Patient
Spontaneous renal haemorrhage is a rare but severe condition known as Wunderlich syndrome (WS). The classic presentation includes sudden-onset flank pain, a palpable flank mass and hypovolaemic shock (Lenk’s triad).

Exploring the Spectrum of Kidney Ciliopathies
Ciliopathies are a group of multi-organ diseases caused by the disruption of the primary cilium. This event leads to a variety of kidney disorders, including nephronophthisis, renal cystic dysplasia, and renal cell carcinoma (RCC).

Multilocular Cystic Renal Cell Carcinoma: An Unusual Gross Appearance [PDF]
Multilocular Cystic Renal Cell Carcinoma (MCRCC) represents a rare variant of clear cell (conventional) renal cell carcinomas. Attributable to its distinct characteristics in prognosis and its natural history, MCRCC was recognised as a separate subtype ...

Not All Antibodies Are Created Equal: Factors That Influence Antibody Mediated Rejection. [PDF]
Consistent with Dr. Paul Terasaki's "humoral theory of rejection" numerous studies have shown that HLA antibodies can cause acute and chronic antibody mediated rejection (AMR) and decreased graft survival. New evidence also supports a role for antibodies

This work introduces photo‐crosslinkable tyraminated poly(vinyl alcohol)‐gelatin (PVA‐GT) hydrogels as tunable injectable platforms for tissue engineering and growth factor delivery applications. This schematic illustrates the two developed hydrogel formulations and the experimental workflow used to evaluate their physico‐chemical properties in vitro ...

Modern paradigm in the diagnosis of cystic diseases of the kidneys
Cystic diseases of the kidneys are a fairly common pathology, which has a negative impact on the course of underlying disease affecting the kidneys, or even being the primary renal pathology. The purpose of this review is to analyze the latest literature

Renal cystic disease proteins play critical roles in the organization of the olfactory epithelium.
It was reported that some proteins known to cause renal cystic disease (NPHP6; BBS1, and BBS4) also localize to the olfactory epithelium (OE), and that mutations in these proteins can cause anosmia in addition to renal cystic disease. We demonstrate here
