Microphysiological Systems for Comorbidity Studies: Chronic Kidney Disease and Osteoarthritis

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This review highlights the potential of organ‐on‐a‐chip systems for studying comorbidities, using chronic kidney disease (CKD) and osteoarthritis (OA) as examples. It summarizes recent advances in kidney‐on‐a‐chip and joint‐on‐a‐chip models and discusses their current and potential application in investigating CKD, OA, and CKD‐OA comorbidity, aiming to

Results of a novel screening tool measuring dietary sodium knowledge in patients with chronic kidney disease. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
BackgroundReducing dietary sodium has potential to benefit patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Little research is available defining dietary sodium knowledge gaps in patients with pre-dialysis CKD.

Dialysis vintage and outcomes in renal transplantation [PDF]

open access: yesNephrology Dialysis Transplantation, 2018
Pre-emptive kidney transplantation is the recommended strategy for patients with end-stage renal failure in all guidelines [Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO), The Australian and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplantation Registry (ANZDATA), European Renal Best Practice Guideline (ERBP), British Transplant Society (BTS)].

Photocrosslinkable Kidney Decellularized Extracellular Matrix‐Based Bioink for 3D Bioprinting

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A photocrosslinkable bioink is developed from methacrylated decellularized porcine kidney extracellular matrix to create kidney‐specific 3D constructs. This bioink supports high cell viability, promotes multicellular spheroid formation, and enables stable multilayer bioprinting with tunable mechanical properties, providing a versatile platform for ...

Effects of hemodialysis on circulating adrenomedullin concentrations in patients with end-stage renal disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
To characterize the determinants of circulating levels of adrenomedullin (AM), the plasma levels of this peptide were measured in 58 patients with end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis, Predialysis plasma levels of AM were more than twice as high in ...

Cardiovascular disease in dialysis patients

open access: yesNephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation, 2018
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a highly common complication and the first cause of death in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on haemodialysis (HD).

Prevention of renal osteodystrophy in peritoneal dialysis [PDF]

open access: yesKidney International, 1998
Renal osteodystrophy (ROD) is still one of the major long-term complications in end-stage renal disease leading to considerable morbidity. Despite some progress in understanding the pathogenesis of secondary hyperparathyroidism (sHPT) during recent years, prevention and treatment of ROD is still suboptimal, requiring surgical parathyroidectomy in 6 to ...

DNA Barcoding‐Enabled Tracking of Lipid Nanoparticles: Drug‐Loading‐Dependent Biodistribution and Tumor Microenvironment Targeting

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, lipid nanoparticles are tracked in vivo using DNA barcodes to determine how varying drug loadings affect their delivery behaviors in mice. A cost‐effective strategy is developed for simultaneously monitoring the biodistribution of a library of lipid nanoparticles (LNPs).

3D Bioprinted Renal Constructs Using Kidney‐Specific ECM Bioink System on Kidney Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A kidney‐specific bioink derived from decellularized porcine kidney tissue supports the encapsulation, viability, and maturation of human primary kidney cells within 3D bioprinted constructs. In vivo, it also promotes the recruitment of host renal progenitor cells, collectively enhancing structural and functional regeneration of renal tissue.
