Lactulose and Renal Failure

Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology, 1997
The introduction of lactulose as a new therapeutic agent for treatment of hepatic encephalopathy was a major breakthrough in this field. It was hypothesized that lactulose might prevent postoperative renal impairment after biliary surgery in patients with obstructive jaundice.

Acute renal failure

Seminars in Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 2009
Acute renal failure (now acute kidney injury) is a common complication of critical illness affecting between 30 and 60% of critically ill patients. The development of a consensus definition (RIFLE--risk, injury, failure, loss, end-stage system) has allowed standardization of reporting and epidemiological work.

Renal failure in the alligator

American Journal of Physiology-Legacy Content, 1961
Intraperitoneal injection of d-serine into alligators produced renal failure characterized by decreased NH4HCO3 excretion, increased NaCl and NaHCO3 excretion, decreased uric acid clearance, and acidemia. Oliguria or anuria was common in the early stages. Blood uric acid levels as high as 70 mg% were observed.

The Anemia of Renal Failure

Archives of Internal Medicine, 1958
The association of anemia with uremia is a striking one. However, just as the actual pathogenesis of the signs and symptoms associated with renal disease is poorly understood, so also is the mechanism of development of anemia in this syndrome. It is the purpose of these investigations to evaluate the relative importance of productive and destructive ...

RENAL FAILURE IN MALARIA

The Lancet, 1967
Abstract Renal failure of short duration was observed in three patients who had a heavy infestation of Plasmodium falciparum. This was associated with a low urine-sodium, a retained ability of tubular reabsorption of water, and non-remarkable urine findings. There was no evidence of dehydration or intravascular haemolysis.

INVESTIGATIONS IN RENAL FAILURE

EDTNA-ERCA Journal, 2004
The investigations which have been discussed above are by no means exhaustive. Since those with renal disease usually have multifactorial disease processes, many other specific investigations may be indicated. Although techniques and tests will continue to be updated and improved, it is hoped that by nurses understanding something of the current ...
