Exciton Radiative Lifetimes in Hexagonal Diamond Ge and SixGe1–x Alloys

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Strong room‐temperature photoluminescence reported in hexagonal Ge conflicts with theory predicting a nearly dark band edge. First‐principles calculations of excitonic radiative lifetimes fill a key gap in this debate, showing that pristine hexagonal Ge remains intrinsically weakly emissive, while Si alloying only modestly shortens the lifetime and ...

A Proof‐of‐Concept Assessment of a Novel Wearable Eyelid Muscle Device: A Pre‐Clinical Animal Cadaver Study for Eyelid Closure Restoration

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This article introduces a soft wearable eyelid sling device incorporating a hydraulic soft artificial muscle (SAM) for achieving complete closure of an eyelid. The SAM is driven by a cam mechanism that provides a displacement profile closely matched with those of a healthy eyelid.

On renewal theory for cluster processes

open access: yes
We prove several forms of renewal theorem tailored to renewal processes with marks and clusters. In particular, for an i.i.d. sequence $(\xi_i,X_i)_{i \geq 0}$, where $\xi_0$ denotes a finite point process on $\mathbb{R}$ and $X_0$ denotes a nonnegative ...

A Review on Sensor Technologies, Control Approaches, and Emerging Challenges in Soft Robotics

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This review provides an introspective of sensors and controllers in soft robotics. Initially describing the current sensing methods, then moving on to the control methods utilized, and finally ending with challenges and future directions in soft robotics focusing on the material innovations, sensor fusion, and embedded intelligence for sensors and ...

Continuum Mechanics Modeling of Flexible Spring Joints in Surgical Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A new mechanical model of a tendon‐actuated helical extension spring joint in surgical robots is built using Cosserat rod theory. The model can implicitly handle the unknown contacts between adjacent coils and numerically predict spring shapes from straight to significantly bent under actuation forces.

Renewal theory and level passage by subordinators

open access: yes
Renewal processes (nondecreasing partial-sum processes) generated by infinitely divisible life times are used as stepping stones between general nondecreasing partial-sum processes and nondecreasing Lévy processes (subordinators). In this way, it is easy
