Development and Validation of a Next‐Generation Mechanistic Model of the Electric Arc Furnace

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
This study presents a next‐generation mechanistic model of the electric arc furnace (EAF). It describes equations for all crucial processes appearing during the steel‐recycling process in an EAF, i.e., thermal, mass, and chemical. The model was parameterized and validated using industrial EAF data.

Optimal representation of time-dependent spherical geometries

open access: yesGraphical Models
Applications in fields such as fluid mechanics, video games and image processing frequently involve the simulation of 3D objects with spherical topology, with a surface quantity that varies with the geometry and/or according to some surface partial ...

Antimicrobial Use in Livestock: The Economic Cost of Action or Inaction

open access: yesJournal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper quantifies the economy‐wide consequences of two independent global stress‐tests in livestock production. The first assesses the effects of phasing out antimicrobial growth promoters (AGPs), and the second evaluates the long‐term impacts of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) progression.

Prescribed pharmaceutical alternatives initiative coinciding with reductions in unregulated street opioid use among young people who use drugs: An interrupted time series analysis

open access: yesAddiction, EarlyView.
Abstract Background and aims In British Columbia, Canada, an initiative was implemented in 2020 to reduce overdose mortality by prescribing pharmaceutical opioids (primarily hydromorphone) as a substitute for the toxic unregulated drug supply. This study estimated changes in the level and trend of unregulated opioid use and non‐prescribed hydromorphone

Twisted times, the Schwarzian and its deformations in DSSYK

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics
The IR dynamics of SYK is that of the Schwarzian theory, the effective theory of broken reparametrization invariance. In the double scaling limit, SYK is completely solvable by chord diagrams, whose generating functional is a bilocal Liouville theory. At

Review of cognitive diagnostic models (CDMs): Recent methodological advancements for addressing practical challenges

open access: yesBritish Journal of Mathematical and Statistical Psychology, EarlyView.
Abstract Cognitive diagnostic models (CDMs) have become essential tools for providing fine‐grained information about individuals' mastery of cognitive skills. While prior reviews have emphasized statistical foundations and deep learning‐based developments, this article focuses on recent methodological innovations designed to address persistent ...

A Real‐Time Multi‐Scale Neural Representation for Complex Surface Reflectance

open access: yesComputer Graphics Forum, EarlyView.
Abstract Recent machine learning methods have significantly advanced the state of the art in the classic problem of representing surface appearance over angle, space, and scale. The models tend, however, to be relatively heavy compared to traditional fixed‐function representations, making real‐time application challenging.

How Does Neural Network Reparametrization Improve Geophysical Inversion?

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Machine Learning and Computation
Full waveform inversion (FWI) is a high‐resolution seismic inversion technique and great efforts have been made to mitigate the multi‐solution problem, such as the traditional total variation (TV) regularization. Different from traditional regularization,

Fermionic localization of the schwarzian theory

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics, 2017
The SYK model is a quantum mechanical model that has been proposed to be holographically dual to a 1 + 1-dimensional model of a quantum black hole. An emergent “gravitational” mode of this model is governed by an unusual action that has been called the ...
