On optimality and construction of circular repeated-measurements designs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The aim of this paper is to characterize and construct universally optimal designs among the class of circular repeated-measurements designs when the parameters do not permit balance for carry-over effects. It is shown that some circular weakly neighbour

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.

Can measurement of glucose levels in blood and peritoneal fluid be used to diagnose septic peritonitis in dogs?

open access: yesVeterinary Evidence, 2022
PICO question Can the measurement of blood and peritoneal fluid effusion glucose levels be used to accurately diagnose septic peritonitis in dogs when compared to cytology and bacterial culture?

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

Identification of a Shiga toxin A‐derived peptide internalized into Gb3 receptor‐bearing cells via interaction with the Shiga toxin B subunit

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The process of internalization of the Shiga toxin A subunit via formation of a complex with the Shiga toxin B subunit, which specifically binds to the Gb3 receptor. The peptide is designed to act as a carrier of drugs into cancer cells. Here, we explored the potential of peptides derived from the catalytic A subunit of Shiga toxin (STxA) to be drug ...

Designing stepped wedge trials to evaluate physical activity interventions in schools: methodological considerations

open access: yesInternational Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity
Background In a stepped wedge design, schools are randomised to a sequence of measurements, with each sequence transitioning to intervention status at a different time.

The study design elements employed by researchers in preclinical animal experiments from two research domains and implications for automation of systematic reviews.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
Systematic reviews are increasingly using data from preclinical animal experiments in evidence networks. Further, there are ever-increasing efforts to automate aspects of the systematic review process.

Memory Effects in Repeated Survey Questions: Reviving the Empirical Investigation of the Independent Measurements Assumption

open access: yesSurvey Research Methods, 2020
It is common to repeat survey questions in the social sciences, for example to estimate test-retest reliability or in pretest-posttest experimental designs.

An epithelial GPR35 isoform supports tumor‐associated transcriptional and metabolic phenotypes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
GPR35 generates two functionally distinct isoforms with previously unresolved roles. GPR35‐short mediates immune‐cell chemotaxis, while GPR35‐long is enriched in colorectal cancer epithelium, where it supports increased metabolism, proliferation, and tumor‐associated transcriptional programs.
