Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Landfill leachate treatment process is transforming and releasing banned per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances to UK water

open access: yesFrontiers in Water
Landfills are a known source of PFAS pollution. Many have environmental permits allowing the discharge of treated leachate to controlled waters. In this article we compared leachate data for 17 PFAS from 17 different landfill sites across the UK.

Reporter Genes

open access: yes, 2008
Reporter genes have been widely used in plant molecular biology, typically to discern patterns of gene expression, but also as markers of transformed cells during stable transformation procedures. The ideal marker gene would be expected to display characteristics such as ease and cheapness of use, lack of toxicity, and robustness; and the most commonly ...

AIECE general report; report submitted at the general meeting of 5-6 November 2009 [PDF]

open access: yes
The worst part of the financial crisis is behind us. Nevertheless, the fall in global output in 2009 will be the largest of the post-war period. As a result, unemployment and government deficits are rising steeply this year, while inflation will be very ...

The role and implications of mammalian cellular circadian entrainment

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
At their most fundamental level, mammalian circadian rhythms occur inside every individual cell. To tell the correct time, cells must align (or ‘entrain’) their circadian rhythm to the external environment. In this review, we highlight how cells entrain to the major circadian cues of light, feeding and temperature, and the implications this has for our

Molecular bases of circadian magnesium rhythms across eukaryotes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Circadian rhythms in intracellular [Mg2+] exist across eukaryotic kingdoms. Central roles for Mg2+ in metabolism suggest that Mg2+ rhythms could regulate daily cellular energy and metabolism. In this Perspective paper, we propose that ancestral prokaryotic transport proteins could be responsible for mediating Mg2+ rhythms and posit a feedback model ...

Supply changes caused by proprietary hop varieties

open access: yesHmeljarski Bilten
We used the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) to evaluate changes of a hop industry concentration and global competitiveness related to the area and production changes in proprietary varieties of hops relative to public varieties.
