Changing institutional research strategies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
University research strategies make statements about research ambitions, but rarely speak directly about scholarly communications. At the same time, communication of all sorts has become central to a university, whether to support recruitment, present a

Digital Actuation Control of Soft Robotic Origami With Self‐Folding Liquid Crystal Elastomer Hinges

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Self‐folding soft‐rigid hybrid robotic origami is enabled by liquid crystal elastomer actuators with embedded Joule heating and closed‐loop digital control. Digitally addressable hinges provide reversible and programmable transitions between distinct folded states while maintaining actuation performance at high cycle counts (over 1500).

Using Survey Research to Evaluate Communications Campaigns [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The use of survey research is perhaps the best example of the need to plan for communications evaluation because it is costly and highly sensitive to three elements of campaign design: your audience, your goal, and your campaign's communications budget ...

Laboratory Experiments on 5G Cellular Technologies - A Case Study on the Synergy of Research and Experiential Learning [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Teaching and research complement each other. This is an advice often given to young professors, to encourage them to find synergy between research and teaching, i.e., to let research aid teaching, and vice-versa.

Bio‐Inspired Molecular Events in Poly(Ionic Liquids)

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Originating from dipolar and polar inter‐ and intra‐chain interactions of the building blocks, the topologies and morphologies of poly(ionic liquids) (PIL) govern their nano‐ and micro‐processibility. Modulating the interactions of cation‐anion pairs with aliphatic dipolar components enables the tunability of properties, facilitated by “bottom‐up ...

Non-Orthogonal Unicast and Multicast Transmission for Massive MIMO With Statistical Channel State Information

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2018
We investigate non-orthogonal unicast and multicast (NOUM) transmission for massive multiple-input multiple-output systems, where only statistical channel state information of all user terminals is available at the base station.

An open platform for rapid-prototyping protection and control schemes with IEC 61850 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Communications is becoming increasingly important to the operation of protection and control schemes. Although offering many benefits, using standards-based communications, particularly IEC 61850, in the course of the research and development of novel ...

In‐Memory Euclidean Distance Computation in a Stacked Memristor Crossbar for Hardware Self‐Organizing Maps

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A stacked memristor crossbar architecture is presented that enables direct in‐memory computation of Euclidean distance through intrinsic current subtraction at a shared middle electrode. By physically encoding weights and squared weights in vertically aligned layers, the system realizes energy‐efficient self‐organizing map learning, demonstrating ...
