Colour Resemblance and Colour Realism

open access: yesRivista di Estetica, 2010
One prominent ambition of theories of colour is to pay full justice to how colours are subjectively given to us; and another to reconcile this first-personal perspective on colours with the third-personal one of the natural sciences.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

The botnet: webs of hegemony/zombies who publish [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The scholarly communication structure at present bears a strong resemblance to a malware system called a botnet. This piece explores this metaphor and proposes ways in which the library can become a bi-directional information hub called the Research ...

Unified perspective on proteins: A physics approach

open access: yes, 2004
We study a physical system which, while devoid of the complexity one usually associates with proteins, nevertheless displays a remarkable array of protein-like properties. The constructive hypothesis that this striking resemblance is not accidental leads

b-Bit Minwise Hashing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
This paper establishes the theoretical framework of b-bit minwise hashing. The original minwise hashing method has become a standard technique for estimating set similarity (e.g., resemblance) with applications in information retrieval, data management ...

Generalization and False Memory in an Acquired Equivalence Paradigm: The Influence of Physical Resemblance Across Related Episodes

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2021
The ability to make inferences about related experiences is an important function of memory that allows individuals to build generalizable knowledge.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Planar metamaterial with transmission and reflection that depend on the direction of incidence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We report that normal incidence reflection and transmission of circularly polarized electromagnetic waves from and through planar split-ring microwave metamaterials with chiral symmetry breaking depends on the incidence direction and handedness of ...
