Relationship between residence time, fluid dynamics and efficiency in countercurrent flow equipment

open access: closedChemical Engineering & Technology, 1988
AbstractThe suitability of any item of equipment for a given thermal separation process cannot always be judged solely in the light of efficient and loading range data. In vacuum rectification, involving a large number of theoretical stages, the vapour pressure drop per transfer unit exerts a considerable effect on the energy consumption and thus ...

Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling of a Bench-scale Pump−Mixer:  Head, Power and Residence Time Distribution

open access: closedIndustrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, 2007
The present work involves several single-phase computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of a continuous-flow bench-scale pump−mixer that uses a top-shrouded turbine with trapezoidal blades. Baffle−impeller interaction has been modeled using the sliding-mesh approach. The standard k−e model has been used for turbulence modeling.

Determining possible thrombus sites in an extracorporeal device, using computational fluid dynamics-derived relative residence time

open access: closedComputer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering, 2014
The prediction of conditions that may result in thrombus formation is a useful application of computational fluid dynamics. A number of techniques exist, based on the consideration of wall shear stress and regions of low blood flow; however, no clear guideline exists for the best practice of their use.

Investigating the Mean Residence Time in a Two-Phase Oil-Water Separator Using Volume of Fluid Multiphase Theory in Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulation

open access: closedSPE Production & Operations, 2023
Summary Multiphase separators are essential to chemical units, especially in the oil and gas industry. Because separators are usually the first equipment installed in the oil and gas units, their performance directly affects other equipment. A two-phase oil-water separator was investigated in this study.

Modeling hydrodynamics and path/residence time of aquaculture-like particles in a mixed-cell raceway (MCR) using 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD)

open access: closedAquacultural Engineering, 2015
Abstract A three-dimensional (3D) simulation of a commercial-size mixed-cell raceway (MCR) was performed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Hydrodynamics of the MCR were fully characterized and validated against experimental data. A simulation of path and residence time of aquaculture-like particles was also conducted to understand solids ...

Characterization of a Multiple-Channel Electrochemical Cell by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Residence Time Distribution (RTD)

open access: closedECS Transactions, 2010
Multiple-channel electrochemical cells are used for the electrocoagulation treatment of pollutants, but sometimes their use can be limited because of lack of knowledge of both hydrodynamic and current distribution performance. Most of the research devoted to electrocoagulation processes, do not present a preliminary hydrodynamic study of the selected ...
