Determining possible thrombus sites in an extracorporeal device, using computational fluid dynamics-derived relative residence time

Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering, 2014
The prediction of conditions that may result in thrombus formation is a useful application of computational fluid dynamics. A number of techniques exist, based on the consideration of wall shear stress and regions of low blood flow; however, no clear guideline exists for the best practice of their use.

Characterization of a Multiple-Channel Electrochemical Cell by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Residence Time Distribution (RTD)

ECS Transactions, 2010
Multiple-channel electrochemical cells are used for the electrocoagulation treatment of pollutants, but sometimes their use can be limited because of lack of knowledge of both hydrodynamic and current distribution performance. Most of the research devoted to electrocoagulation processes, do not present a preliminary hydrodynamic study of the selected ...

Residence time analysis on cerebral aneurysms treated with coils using planar-laser-induced fluorescence and computational fluid dynamics

2022
Abstract Biofidelic numerical models have been developed such as the coil-resolved model to study hemodynamics in the treated aneurysm. In this model, the geometry of the coils is recreated from high-resolution tomography scans of a phantom aneurysm treated with coils. However, this model hasn’t been validated.

Study of fluid dynamic conditions in the selected static mixers part II‐determination of the residence time distribution

The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, 2017
AbstractThe presented paper is part of the complete description of fluid‐dynamic conditions in the selected static mixers: Koflo and Kenics. The research was also performed for an empty pipe used as a reference state. The scope of work included the analysis of the residence time distribution in the mentioned devices for different Reynolds numbers for ...

Relationship between residence time, fluid dynamics and efficiency in countercurrent flow equipment

Chemical Engineering & Technology, 1988
AbstractThe suitability of any item of equipment for a given thermal separation process cannot always be judged solely in the light of efficient and loading range data. In vacuum rectification, involving a large number of theoretical stages, the vapour pressure drop per transfer unit exerts a considerable effect on the energy consumption and thus ...

Studying human exposure to vehicular emissions using computational fluid dynamics and an urban mobility simulator: The effect of sidewalk residence time, vehicular technologies and a traffic-calming device

Science of the Total Environment, 2019
A computational system consisting of an urban mobility simulator, validated fluid dynamics and an integral exposure model, is proposed to obtain cyclist and pedestrian exposure to PMx and NOx. Pedestrian activities in the urban anthroposphere include walking and running.

Particle Image Velocimetry–Validated, Computational Fluid Dynamics–Based Design to Reduce Shear Stress and Residence Time in Central Venous Hemodialysis Catheters

ASAIO Journal, 2007
As crucial factors in blood clot formation, shear stress distribution and low flow zones are assessed in different central venous catheter tip designs by using a combined numeric and experimental approach. Computational Fluid Dynamics was validated with Particle Image Velocimetry by comparing simulated and measured velocities and shear strains in three

Residence time study of a hydrodynamic vortex separator applied to predicting disinfection performance

open access: yesProceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part E: Journal of Process Mechanical Engineering, 2009
The fluid residence time characterization of a 3.4 m diameter hydrodynamic vortex separator (HDVS) has been carried out under laboratory conditions. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling has then been undertaken for the same conditions at which ...

Case study comparisons of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling versus tracer testing for determining clearwell residence times in drinking water treatment

Journal of Environmental Engineering and Science, 2006
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling and full-scale tracer tests (using barium or fluoride) were used to determine the baffle factors of clearwells at three Canadian water treatment facilities (two in Ottawa, Ontario, and one in Peterborough, Ontario). A variety of clearwell baffling configurations and a range of flow rates (35 to 257 MLD) were
