Measurement of Residual Stress in the Brain. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Biomech Eng
ABSTRACT Mechanical stress in brain tissue is an important feature of the brain, likely to play key roles in brain development and brain injury. Here, we characterize residual stresses in grey matter and white matter from the deformed shape of tissue cylinders extracted from the brain using a biopsy needle and imaged with high ...

Residual Stresses in Glasses [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2013
The history dependence of the glasses formed from flow-melted steady states by a sudden cessation of the shear rate $\dotγ$ is studied in colloidal suspensions, by molecular dynamics simulations, and mode-coupling theory. In an ideal glass, stresses relax only partially, leaving behind a finite persistent residual stress.

Residual Strain and Stress in Biocrystals [PDF]

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, 2018
AbstractThe development of residual strains within a material is a valuable engineering technique for increasing the material's strength and toughness. Residual strains occur naturally in some biominerals and are an important feature that is recently highlighted in biomineral studies.

Weld residual stress effects on fatigue crack growth behaviour of aluminium alloy 2024-T351 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The interaction between residual stress and fatigue crack growth rate has been investigated in middle tension and compact tension specimens machined from a variable polarity plasma arc welded aluminium alloy 2024-T351 plate.

Characterisation of residual stress state and distortion in welded plates stress engineered by local mechanical tensioning [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Local mechanical tensioning is one of the most efficient and industrially relevant stress engineering techniques to modify weld residual stress field and subsequently reduce buckling distortion. However, application of rolling load and its magnitude need

Size effects on residual stress and fatigue crack growth in friction stir welded 2195-T8 aluminium - Part I: Experiments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Residual stress fields were measured in three different sizes of Compact-Tension (C(T)) and eccentrically loaded single edge notch (ESE(T)) specimens containing transverse or longitudinal welds. The effect of size on residual stress profiles was studied.

Problems in using a comb sample as a stress-free reference for the determination of welding residual stress by diffraction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Precise measurement of a stress-free reference lattice parameter is vital in the determination of residual stress by diffraction techniques using θ/2θ-based analyses.

Eigenstrain modelling of residual stress generated by arrays of Laser Shock Peeing shots and determination of the complete stress field using limited strain measurements [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This paper presents a hybrid explicit finite element (FE) /eigenstrain model for predicting the residual stress generated by arrays of adjacent/overlapping laser shock peening (LSP) shots where the use of a completely explicit FE analysis may be ...
